Let me tell you, this irritates me the most of all in American sports. When you win a game that is only played in America, you can't call yourselves "World Champions." And the "World Series" is played in the US (and once every 20 years in Toronto.)
Especially in basketball, which is played in Europe and Asia (mostly) as well, you can't call yourselves world champs. Especially when you refuse to play European clubs in real competition.

Have you seen national basketball teams? I doubt it. You always expect to win because you're "USA USA USA" but it's a shock because you don't even care for the other countries involved and think they are nothing (see FIBA World Chamionships + FIFA World Cup).

No one has the right to call themself a World Champion of anything until they have literally played the whole world.
You can be a 'school champion' or 'regional champion' because you beat all of the competitors in those divisions... But to say you are a 'world champion' indicates that you have successfully beaten the entire world.
The Olympics is the only time such a thing can be said.

olympics is only for "amateurs", though. doesn't really count in the same boat.

Then, I would have to say we do well in Chess, Boxing, Tennis, and..... Well, those are the only ones where professional players actually COMPETE against the rest of the world...
