If you think about it, for baseball & football & other sports like that, you really are world champions if you win a championship. I'll use the MLB for an example. The game is huge in America, Japan & South America, and look how many people who played for those countries are in America now. The MLB has scouts all over the world who judge players in Japan & South America. If they think they can compete in America the player is offered millions of dollars. Just think of 2 of the biggest Japanese players, Ichiro & Daisuke Matsuzaka, they were extremely successful in Japan, but then they were offered millions of dollars & now they play in America. In South America it is a dream a lot of kids have to be discovered by an MLB team & to play in America with the best ball players in the world while being able to support their families. I highly doubt the best soccer team in America calls themselves world champions though.

So if I'm correct, you are saying that since the best players play in MLB, the winner of that league shouldn't have to play teams from other countries to prove their worth. Well, when offered they should at least accept and not say "Hey, we're the best in the world, and all you smaller countries can't do anything about it." If you look at the 1st post, that's exactly what happens in the NBA.

While the original usage of the colors may date back to Charlemagne, I don't think that people associate the same meaning with the flags at this point. The colors stick but the interpretation changes.

So because America has more money, they have better players? World championships don't deal with clubs, they deal with countries. So those good japanese players would still play for Japan.

I know we are suppose to be moving on, but as for Rugby, Did NO ONE notice USA had a team in the Rugby World cup, that finished this past weekend. Well the tournament finished this past weekend, USA's rugby team finished at least about 3 weeks ago. Never-the-less they had a team that they entered.

Also, now that I think about it, while baseball does have the World Series, I wasn't aware that we became world champions in any other sports. We have the Super Bowl for (American) Football, the Stanley Cup Finals for hockey, the NBA Finals for Basketball...to be honest I don't watch any other sports, but I don't think we declare ourselves world champions in anything. I apologize in advance if I'm totally off the ball on this.

That was the first time on record the colours appeared in combination, it wasn't seen as a national symbol differentiated from other standard heraldic colours for centuries after that. We can all go look at wikipedia and quote the first mention it gives. Way to research....
The first time it actually appeared as a national symbol was, I believe, with the Marquis de Lafayette in 1789. The White for the monarchy (not yet deposed), and the red and blue for Paris. It was used first as an official navy flag from 1790. Before this, the national flag was three fleur-de-lis on a blue background which, I think, DOES date from the time of Charlemagne.

I'm asking because more and more sports were introduced throughout the thread and I don't know if they all play some world cups, series, leagues whatever that are then more or less strictly intra-american or even intra-USamerican.
