Actually, they have studied that. Scientists have found that incompetent people don't know they are incompetent. The good news, however, is that they can learn to recognize incompetence and change. So if you are not learning because you don't have the core competencies to learn, well you are also unlikely to recognize that weakness in yourself.
The key to overcoming this is "purposeful practice." In other words, you continue to work on your learning skills by trying to learn (practice) under the guidance of a mentor that knows what they are doing. So, it appears, finding a good teacher and practicing as much as possible is what it is all about. After all, that is how you get to Carnegie Hall.
