Even though I chose to live as close to work as possible and have benefited greatly over the years getting away with 20-25$/week for my traveling, now I am having to budget an extra 120$/ month and drive less. Which gets me to wondering, a lot of people are probably having to go through the same thing, but accounting for 2-300$ per month, which is a pretty major blow to any person or family. How bad is it out there for you long commuters? How are you guys handling it? anyone go to their boss about it and ask for a raise? I wonder if some people even have a choice as they might have to move or even quit the job for something closer, if that is even possible. Anyone start riding the bus? Anyone have to choose between a car payment or the gas to fuel it? Sell the house and car and get a bike?

my gas prices are cheaper than that!!!! if it was $4 that's crazy i have never seen 4 dollar gas. I should say the cheapest way to cut our price's down on gas is build more refineries. There is a surplussed of oil out there but not enough refinery to turn them into gas.
and you guys have the cheapest gas in the world still - get over it
You said it! Over here we're fondly reminiscing about the days when it was the equivalent of 7 bucks a gallon. It's over 8 at the moment which is quite a stretch. Enjoy your 3 dollar something gas, lucky bastards...

Don't piss and moan at us because your soft socialist government has imposed European style VAT tax. Go after your leaders.

Events like Katrina and 9/11 are just mere blips compared to more serious events like what's going down in Libya or global droughts, etc.

You do realize that our country is huge and you can't 'ride a bike' to work all the time, right?
While I like the sentiment, and I wish our voters would've done a better job planning for the future and building light rail that criss-crosses our country, it hasn't happened, so riding a bike doesn't really work.
Anyway, gas is pretty much $4 a gallon here and I'm dealing with it, though the wife and I haven't been doing as much random traveling because of how much we are spending on gas.
euro 95 (or better knonw as bezine) is € 1.749 per liter in the Netherlands 1.00 EUR = 1.42685 USD 3.785 L is 1 gallon
1 gallon costs about 1.749 x 1.42685 x 3.785 = 9.45 (roundeed up)
so we pay 9.45 dollars a gallon..
Also my boss just announced he is cutting back on our carexpences, so personal who are forced to use a car are going to have to pay a larger share of the costs. yup, it sucks

Not as easy as that. Though there is a transit system in place in my city, using public transit for my job is impossible. Riding a bike is even more impossible.
Gas in my part of Canada is $1.33/litre. Not sure what the conversion is to gallons, but gas is higher up here than in the USA.
Yeah, I commute by bike. I only have to go about 5.7 miles from home, so it's a nice 25 minute bike ride one way. I can see why some people may not like riding bikes to work, but to save on gas the bus and carpools are reqally the only other options (unless you walk);

3.785 L is 1 gallon So 1.33 USD is about 5.03 USD a gallon Meaning about half of what I pay...

For me it isn't not liking biking (my wife and kids bike a lot in the summer months), it's that it isn't possible with my work. I own a couple of restaurants and a couple of rental properties. I would not be able to do what I need to do by biking across the city daily. And though some people bike all winter long up here, it is quite dangerous.

Yeah, biking works for me because I don't have to run around a lot. My Dad repairs appliances and biking doesn't work for his job either.

Try riding a bike through Phoenix, AZ during the summer carrying cameras, light stands, silks, mics and booms, and all the other fun stuff we use. For that matter, try riding the bike 30 miles each way to schools with 20 pounds on books on your back.

nope it has never gone above 4 dollars here most of the time its under 3
Well, I'm paying over $4/gal for diesel, and every other day I fill up with about 150 - 175 gals at a pop. Okay well I own my own semi-truck so everyone watch out because as fuel goes up so does the rates the shippers pay, and the cost of our every day necessities in life like food goes up. So we'll be paying for the high prices anyways. Right now I get paid $1.38/mile, and I have to pay for my own diesel. At $4.119 per gal and putting in 175 gal, my final cost is $720 every 2 days. So you all have it easy at $3.90/gal and only putting in 20 gals at a pop.

Canada. (not opec)!!! we also have at least 2 refiners near us!
I was under impression that AZ got oil from Canada... maybe we get a mix, as we never had quite as expensive as other places, but we did get quite expensive.
