I was just wondering if it's generally Ok to join a team game with people who outrank you by a couple of levels. Is it Ok for a low-ranker like myself to team up with a captain or a major without asking that person first?
As long as you're willing to let them coach you, you're actually doing them a favor. A good doubles team should wait for both players to be on board with essentially every move they make (at least until they've played together often enough to build up trust). Thus, if you're partner is really strong, they may be able to talk you out of any bad moves you might have made.
If you manage to win, your low rating will be factored into theirs when determining the points pay-out and they'll get more points for the win (or lose less for a loss) than they would have had they played with another high ranking player.
From what I understand, some high ranking players actually look for noobs to partner with for this very reason.

Yeah, good point. I actually would take the role of apprentice, or, as rank suggests, subordinate.
But I've learned that a team mate has to be a good communicator. I'm in a game with a noob and he is ignoring me completely
if you see a game that has one person in it and its a dubs or trips. i would ask the starter before you join. what alot of us do is like to set up 5-? however many games as wed like. then we have a perferred partner join the game. but if you see some one setting up one game and its dubs or trips its ok

Ok now that's helpful too. I wouldn't have known this unless you'd pointed it out.
I once played a triples game with a general (Belzbub) and a colonel when I was still a sergeant and it was the easiest game I ever played. They were nice enough and I just took Oceania, sat there and deployed on them. The confidence they had was scary - after a couple of rounds I was told the game was over - we were going to win. Great experience.
Anyway my opinion is that if you want to form a team, make the game private and then people like myself won't but into it.
i think that is totally acceptable as long as you show up to play. one of the most annoying things is having a partner join but never shows up. that really grinds my gears.
its fine, some will drop you some wont...but if you see someone setting up 20 dubs, and you see the same player joining all, its a good bet they are set up for him, so you may want to ask first....
my games get joined all the time, and ive met some good players leaving them, but ive dropped a few also, because knowing the person, or of them is half the battle...if you cant work together, you cant win....

You know what really grinds my gears? Stay at home dads. I mean, whats up with that? Go get a job or something.
(not meant to offend anybody, but i though it was funny)

That's not funny!
Damn, I wish I could stay at home with my baby all day playing games while my woman went out and worked her arse off to pay our bills. And I wouldn't mind doing housework either... as long as I don't have to work a full-time job.
