Science fiction vehicles in films

Post by Pedronicus »

I was watching a bit of Timecop last night and was bowled over by the awful cars they had made for the film. (they had obviously spent f*ck all on the script, so I was expecting some of the left over budget to be spent on the look of the film) :?

by way of a reminder what it looked like, feast your eyes upon this pile of steaming shite;

It would appear that in the future, aerodynamics have been superseded by gluing old cereal boxes to a box, and looking out the window is an overrated way of passing the time during a journey.

Another film that made a right dogs dinner of the vehicles was "Total Recall" ($100 million budget roughly)

which other howlers have I missed out?

Also - post pictures of the good ones

Naming any movie with good vehicles is the real test. And you're right in that big budgets don't equate to good design.

Ignoring those films that made no effort at all, like: Robocop, Terminator 2, Battle for the planet of the Apes and Mad Max.

Even those movies that tried to be imaginative, were blinking awful, like: Bladerunner, Pitch Black, Damnation Alley and The Fifth Element.

Indeed, you get all the way up to contemporary stuff like Minority Report and I Robot before anyone really puts some effort into vehicle design.

Personally, I think much more imagination was applied to vehicles used for TV. There's a whole raft of cool vehicles to be found in the various Gerry Anderson shows. So at least I can reccomend one movie as having some excellent vehicles - Doppleganger. (or Journey to the far side of the Sun - for those with no imagination!)

There is however one exception - but I don't know if this counts.

For the coolest of the cool, I say go see - TRON.

the vehicles in Star Trek were pretty decent, especially the magnetic wheeled bike Kirk rode. The enterprise looke sweet and the romulan ship menacing. Plus the Jellyfish was cool, although I don't know why it needed to have a spinning portion.
