I think the little bastard was trying to push the envelope and it hit him in the face. He is dumb to have done that especially after the VT shootings.
What will happen with censorship now ????

If the school didn't want disturbing writings to be penned, then they shouldn't have made the assignment so open-ended. Even perfectly sane, happy people have disturbing thoughts. Stephen King, for example.Vincent M wrote:http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18353425/>1=9246

The teacher is to blame for his description of the assignment then.vtmarik wrote:If the school didn't want disturbing writings to be penned, then they shouldn't have made the assignment so open-ended. Think about it this way.Vincent M wrote:The teacher is to blame for his description of the assignment then.
But the kid knew what he was wright especially with the VT shootings
I dont care how creative anybody is
I for one refuse to make an assumption based on lack of data. I want to read the entire thing before I judge whether or not this kid was being stupid.foolish_yeti wrote:Pushing the envelope? Get real...Another passage said, "as a teacher, don't be surprised on inspiring the first CG shooting,"
He seriously thought this would go over well?
Creative writing is no excuse for being an idiot.

Why do people always equate freedom of speech with the right to say or write whatever you want?Vincent M wrote:But unfortunately it doesvtmarik wrote:The right to first amendment freedoms do not end at the schoolhouse gate.

What the hell are you people talking about?! The guy's assigment specifacally said that he shouldn't "judge or censor what he is writing". He writes as he is told, experessing his most shocking and violent thoughts (wich are IMO spawned by frustration with the hypocrisy that surrounds him) and people judge him right of the bat. All in all, his writting was the part of the artical that made me the least sick. The creative writing assignment in Lee's English class on Monday instructed students to "write whatever comes to your mind. Do not judge or censor what you are writing," according to a copy of the assignment.

Exactly...the whole "Fire! in a crowded theater is free speech" angle.LSU Tiger Josh wrote:He was fine until he wrote "Another passage said, "as a teacher, don't be surprised on inspiring the first CG shooting," the complaint said." which at that point crosses the lines. As a former English teacher, if I received writing that hinted at either violence, abuse, or criminal action that could very conceivably take place such as a shooting in a school, the very first thing I would be required do is to get in touch with the principal. The next step would be to have the student called into the office and to follow the districts guidelines for such disturbing people.

If I ever get a job teaching Ethics to highschool kids, I certainly won't be giving them any assigments that start with (for example) "Listin all the people that you would like to kill"! It was teacher's fault, and attacking the student cast bad light on both his educators and the "justice" system that prosecutes him.LSU Tiger Josh wrote:He was fine until he wrote "Another passage said, "as a teacher, don't be surprised on inspiring the first CG shooting," the complaint said." which at that point crosses the lines. well shit, what kind of dumbfucker would do that?! dammit not againStopper wrote:Most of you are still talking nonsense. The student was given a completely open-ended assignment, and wrote what he felt like, as was stated in that assignment. End of story.
I've read stuff in English class that was probably comparable to what he wrote, including a poem about an English teacher who goes mad and kills all his students.
There's little to go on in this story, but it appears that unfortunately for this student, we have an bizarrely overnervous English teacher combined with some overzealous policemen, who are making his life more difficult for him than he really deserves.
Now bend over, I've decided I'm going have sex with you all, before I shoot you with my "P90".

??? So what if a student goes on a shooting rampage in the school and names the teacher as their reason? That's a pretty far stretch for justification.mandalorian2298 wrote: What if it turns out that he is right?
When the teacher told the students not to judge or censor their work it is because in creative work often students have difficulty starting because they censor all their ideas and sit there and tell themselves they don't have any ideas. As a pre-writing, preliminary writing or brainstorming activity you just write and then edit it after. This is a valid educational strategy used in classrooms all over the world. This however does not excuse the student to write anything they want- obvious content filters should be applied- e.g. don't write something like Mein Kampf.... "but the teacher told me to write whatever I wanted" is not a valid justification.mandalorian2298 wrote:The teacher was wrong to give out an assigment without thinking of the possible results.
How is a free writing exercise even remotely close to a death threat list?mandalorian2298 wrote:If I ever get a job teaching Ethics to highschool kids, I certainly won't be giving them any assigments that start with (for example) "Listin all the people that you would like to kill"!
I don't know, because the link given doesn't detail it, but I'm willing to bet the student concerned wasn't aware of your rather long-winded and contrived justification as to why he wasn't supposed to write what he thought, when that was exactly was he was told to do.foolish_yeti wrote:When the teacher told the students not to judge or censor their work it is because in creative work often students have difficulty starting because they censor all their ideas and sit there and tell themselves they don't have any ideas. This statement is bizarre, given there's nothing in the link to suggest that the student produced one.foolish_yeti wrote:How is a free writing exercise even remotely close to a death threat list?
