[UI] Change the way the game page looks

Post by isaiah40 »

Concise description:
  • Change the way the game page is laid out to optimize the view ability of the maps (at least width wise)
Specifics/Details:
  • Hide the left menu bar on the game pages
  • Make a "game box" - for lack of better terms
    • You can move it around the page
    • Expand or minimize it
    • View the player stats
    • View the map stats
    • Rate the map
    • Make the game box fixed so when you scroll down it stays in complete view (if it can be done and still be able to move it yourself)
    • Here's the big one - view the the map instructions without having to scroll down or sideways
How this will benefit the site and/or other comments:
  • Optimize the room players have on their monitors to view the maps
  • Remove the map instructions off the map, which at times is cramped using small text, and place it to where you can view it off to the side
  • Mapmakers can then use all the available room within the size restrictions without worrying about how they are going to get all the special instructions on the map
You can view a sample and play with it here

Please discuss away!!!

Great initiative. It would be great if some things were combined into tabs. I also liek your icons for column headers

I like it. It also gives more notice and exposure to the other tabs that are often ignored. Image

Can you give some examples of things that you would like to see combined into tabs?

Exactly, and it could allow us the players a chance to actually rate the map, thereby having a true map rating system!

Love any idea that expands the playability of a game as we'll as broadens the scoop for the designers...

Great idea - I support it 100%.

This is a really great set up. Whilst most maps now have the instructions on the map so that part may never change though. But by removing the side green bar like we did a while ago it really makes the screen have so much more space. Great for maps being able to go bigger without hitting the screen size for most players. The other great thing is the tabs. It allows us far more flexibility to have the screen the way we want it. So many tools like floating chat we already have via outside script, it would be nice to get a uniformed one for all.

In favour of the whole proposition, apart from rating the map. It could be abused easily, someone may find one map very complicated that I think is incredibly simple. Granted it's open for wide interpretation and some people could find it useful, but generally you can look at a map for two minutes and you'll know how complicated it is.

Also, someone brand new to a map plays a veteran and gets pummelled; blames the map; bad rating.

I don't think it's necessary and would bring more negativity than benefits.

Regarding statistics for the players in the game, I'd like to see points earned/lost and win percentage.

Also, is this for active games or awaiting games?

Any chance you can knock something together based on the current page and how it might look with this implemented?

This would be one of the best changes CC can make, in my opinion. Your example page is fantastic.

I have a pretty big laptop screen - 19 inches - but even it can't fit some of the giant maps inside of it. So, getting rid of the left menu and combining them with tabs up top would be amazing.

I also like the idea of different stats, instructions, etc., on the right.
Highest rank: 48th. Highest score: 3,384. Feb. 9, 2014.

I support the idea in general, but would need to know exactly how it would look if implemented. I realise that might not be achievable at the moment though.

Just a thought, it might be worth adding a Clan tab at the top while you're there.

Let me see what I can do! ;)

As for the clan tab, post it as a suggestion.

You might have a hard time with this one. It is not the normal sexy idea like a new medal or spoils. This one might go the way mine did here and here.

Ugh, 'roll-down' menus. Makes me a few seconds further from clicking where I need to go. Multiplied by time spent on CC = not worth it (can't that feature be optional?)

I like the 'map legend' tab though!

So you would rather scroll down the page and/or scroll from side to side? It takes longer to scroll than it would be to click on a tab. Plus on the larger maps, you can/would be able to move the tabs down so you have all the information right there so you wouldn't have to scroll back up to read instructions, see how many regions players have etc. Thereby actually making this way faster.

Is your monitor the size of an iPad?

Here's two substitutes for normal scrolling: (1) get a mouse with a 'fly wheel'; scroll like a champ. (2) ctrl + home. This is done quicker than moving* my mouse to the top, waiting for the drop down menu, dragging my mouse over--Careful! if I go outta bounds, the menu disappears!, then finally clicking on My Games.
  • *From the start of this sentence to the *, I've already accomplished #1 or #2 with the desired page loading.
Drop-down menus sacrifice function for fashion. They work for some sites, but for this kind of site, it's not a good idea. However, if you could demonstrate that the fancy menus would actually attract more paying customers, then I'd be interested.

I'm not arguing against the Tab feature alongside the map. That's not bad.**
  • **Maybe add another tab where BOB inserts the more detailed territory info (e.g. regions X/9, yada yada). CC's standard terry counter isn't useful enough, so I'd still have to scroll down anyway to check the BOB stats.

Also, the old school frame shows (n) next to any wall, inbox, game chat message. How would the drop-down menu do it? Would it permanently hang down for each new message (in the way, thus annoying), or would I have to drag my mouse across each segment, wait for it to pop down, and see if I have any new messages? (wasteful, thus annoying).

Oh okay, the drop down menu is not part of the game page layout. That will be the same as it is now. This suggestion is just to show what the page could look like with the map and all the pertinent map info off to the side in tabs. So please disregard the drop down menu.

Amazing how much more space we get just by removing the left hand side bar. That stops a lot of scrolling alone.

Ohh, okay. If the home page is unaffected, then that's fine.
