Weird looking american trucks

Post by DiM »

So i keep seeing trucks like this one all over the internet.

Image

and to be honest i'm quite baffled. i mean, i'd totally understand if it looked like this:
Image

the second one has proper wheels, more clearence and more importantly more stability to make it safer to drive.

the first one is not only ugly, but it's impractical as its clearance is that of a regular truck and the stability is zero.

so what's the deal? are these cars considered beautiful? is this a recent trend? and more importantly, are they street legal? i can't imagine this sort of thing passing a safety test. you probably have to take corners at 10mph just so you don't tip over.

All new pickup trucks are required to resemble the top picture, due to new Green industry standards. Has to do with fuel economy. Seems backwards to me, but the hell do I know?

Bollocks.

As Serb said, my guess is the price of gas. Skinny tires are a lot less resistance and better fuel economy

i highly doubt it. i mean that ford pick-up truck was custom modified and lifted to be this tall, but the tires were kept at the stock size.
if one would be concerned about fuel price he wouldn't drive a pick-up truck in the first place and he wouldn't pay for a custom modification to the suspensions.

raising your suspensions doesn't in any way help reduce fuel consumption. it just makes your car taller and more unstable (by raising its center of gravity). to stabilize the car, much wider wheels should be fitted.

or maybe you're trying to say he used to have big wheels but then he put back the original ones to save on gas? that could be the case, but no matter how much you save on gas it's not worth risking your life in that abomination and looking hideous at the same time.

Those aren't skinny tires, just regular. It's the removal from the normal context that creates the illusion of being skinny.

@ DiM, personally, I think all these raised suspensions and things look stupid. However, speaking from an objective viewpoint, I guess it is a kind of artwork, taking something common and making it uncommon.

Dude....those are the road tires he has to use while driving legally on highways, etc....once he gets to his play place he replaces them with monster mudders.

The Monster truck you show also puts silly skinny tires on to be shipped in its trailer....

Example: Bigfoot unloaded from its trailer prior to replacement with giant show tires....

Is that DiM wit?

Just teasing you. I was waiting for something more witty from you to use that line.
