is it expected that if you're joining a tournament, that you have a premium account? or does it just depend on which tournament?

If you're non-premium, just make sure you have enough slots if you're going to join.

some tournaments are only non-premium, most don't care and some require premium, most often it is specified by the creator.

and off course if you are no premium, then you should at least leave 1 or 2 slots open (depending on the tournament)
