this whole spam issue

Post by heavycola »

OK look. I am probably way off here, but to me spam is what clutters my hotmail inbox...

What would be wrong with a lighter moderational touch here? Wicked, as you know i have nothing but respect, awe and downright pant-soiling love for many of your modding decisions. However:

What is wrong with a thread going off-topic?
What is wrong with a bit of nonsense here and there?
Why are you so keen to keep these organic expressions out of these forums?
Why, in short do you and the rest of them care?

If someone comes fishing for hits, ban 'em, lock it down. Someone tries to foul up a thread by repeated postings, or whatever, then by all means sort it out. But there is creativity here, and e-n-t-e-r-t-a-i-n-m-e-n-t (which let's not forget is the reason every single one of us is here) to be had in these apparent crimes against forum posting.

I feel it would be a good idea to lighten up a little; stop trying to squeeze flame wars into a shape it doesn't fit, for example; give IK posters more leeway and less finger-wagging warnings; and then go outside and breathe some fresh air, pick some daffodils, take a load off.

I'll put it to a vote though. But seriously - straying off-topic? talking shit? So WHAT?

The best conversations are those that derail.
"Some motherfuckers are always trying to ice skate uphill."

Duane: You know what they say about love and war.
Tim: Yes, one involves a lot of physical and psychological pain, and the other one's war.

Blame Spamalot and their copycatters. believe it or not, IK is not a spam playground. There are people who'd like to carry on normal conversations, debate issues, discuss things, etc... and not have it disrupted by "OMG GFY SPAMMERS RULZ!" or have it derailed so you can talk about my little pony. There are random convo threads already set up, filled with nonsense. Use those, but don't let it overrun the forum, which is what happened before.

I agree - that kind of stuff would be annoying. But we all have the option to ignore posts. To be honest i never took any notice of spamalot anyway. And i've been posting here for a while now and don't remember the forum being overrun by nonsense...

There's a difference between some kid posting 'OMG GFY SPAMMERS RULZ LOL" and someone having a bit of a ponder about stuff. Snorri's right, some of teh best convos are teh ones thet go off down some blind alley. That's all.

Please find me an example of the above.

Raichu, of course.

On the other hand, I agree with HC entirely and think that the last few days have seen wicked exhibiting some of the most bizzare and irrational moderating I've ever seen. I'd detail it more, but I don't actually give that much of a toss.

I suggest you consult your dictionary of choice for the meaning for the word "sarcasm", the word "irony", and then consider the phrase "not really into pokemon".

I see both sides of this, Its hard to draw a line. I agree with what hevycola has said though, very well put. I think the best action would be for the mods in future to see if anyone actually is getting pissed off with a spamming member in a thread before taking action. Now that there are no post counts here, enjoyment is all that matters.

Have you ever had a conversation..and you start looking at a link...and then see another one..and see another one...and all of the sudden you are no place close to where you started and have no clue how you got there...but you are having a blast? Oh...okay. I guess it's just me then. Sorry for going off-topic.

It's the same concept as getting lost on Wikipedia, you talk about something, then talk about something mildly related etc etc until you end up talking about 9/11 or Paul Ron or whatever his name is.

Of course it's our fault. Believe it or not we are not children and we can have our conversations and if someone says something we can ignore it and if a topic derails it usually only become more interesting.
