Start Rating at 3 stars instead of 5

Post by md_armyguy »

Currently, new players start with a rating of 5 stars. New users should start with a rating of 3 stars.:

Specifics:
  • Everyone should at least be an average player starting out. That way, when rated, they have the ability to go up as well as done. As it's designed now, you can only go down.
This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • not sure if it's much of an opinion, but I think it's the way it should be run

I think this is an excellent point you've raised, agree it's a good idea
and am somewhat surprised that nobody noticed this sooner.

Much like new players starting at 1000 points and working their way up,
not starting out as an officer and working their way down.

This might work, but right now, it would require a major overhaul. So many people have/are giving all 5's or are just plain not rating that starting new people off with all 3's would mean their ratings might have "meaning", but would not fix the rest... and as a result, chances are they would get all 5's before long.

It doesn't make sense though, because you would 3 stars with no ratings. As soon as you are rated by one person you average has changed to whatever they rate you (though I think the first 20 ratings are delayed so you can't get a bad rap from one idiot).

There really is no "working up" since the initial 3 stars would have no weight just as the current 5 stars have no weight. You could start with zero and it wouldn't affect the system (though it might slightly change your perception of it).
