I play Travian with my brother, and I have some serious gripes: it is almost impossible for new players to succeed without spending money. There are bonuses available in the game for those who use their credit cards to "purchase" victory. That irritates me. I also have a problem with the fact that new players are instantly turned into "farms" for the more experienced folk. After the first week of "beginner's protection" wears off, one is likely to discover that your entire settlement can be leveled to nothing by an agressive player with catapaults. I read up on ways to deal with the dilemma, and the experts say, "Beg for mercy!" Also, success depends a great deal on playing 24/7. As much of a gamer as I am, I don't have time for that. I have a job.
My question is this: is there a free turn-based or real-time browser game (possibly with similar mechanics as travian) that at least gives new players a sporting chance? Turn-based would be better. That is partly why I like conquer club so much.
