Cheating in a No Spoils Speed game

Postby Luke035 on Sat Jan 16, 2010 9:05 am

Question: if a user's "internet goes down" can they still be listed as being "online" when you click on their profile? I just lost a No Spoils 2 player Speed game http://www.conquerclub.com/game.php?game=6289418 where my opponent and I were in a stalemate, but he did have the slight upperhand on territories - he had a 6 army bonus to my 4, but he was still not getting enough armies to break through the neutral barrier to get to my stockpile and I managed to maintain a smaller presence in the main area of the map to thwart his progress.

So he then misses two consecutive turns (throughout his missed turns, I kept checking his profile and he always had the "Online" tag across the top corner). He is within 10 seconds of missing his third consecutive turn and he starts the turn, makes no attacks, and deploys 10 deferred troops.

When I called him on what I considered cheap tactics to get a bonus in a no spoils game where I kept him from getting any territorial bonuses, he tells me his Internet was down. I commented on how coincidental it was that it came back up just SECONDS before he was about to get booted for too many missed turns. My question here is: if a player's Internet goes down, can their status still show up as ONLINE?

This is a really cheap way to win a game that is otherwise a stalemate.

if he did not activly log out, he would be logged out by the system after 15 minutes, so yes he could have been offline without the game registereing it.
However if you feel he has pulled a cheap tactic, then by all means rate him accordingly.
ps, just for the wise, its not cheating if you miss your turns on purpose. However many feel its bad form.. It is quite common in no spoils games though..

hard to imagine how this gave him an advantage... if he had taken his turns and just deployed without attacking, it would have had the same end result, no?

missing a turn gives your opponent an opportunity to reduce your bonus (and therefore your deferred armies) before you come back.

except in negative bonus games like Dust Bowl, I can't see any strategic value to skipping turns.

your hands were not tied while he was missing turns. maybe you should have done more to improve your position while he was "gone!"

i believe his chat comment to you is accurate... he probably had you beat and just prolonged the game by missing turns... AND gave you a chance to come back and win, which you did not take advantage of.

He had no army bonus to break. His bonus was based on the many territories he held (almost all with just one army and maybe two with 2 armies). I had 7 armies holed up in northern Scotland isolated by a few neutral territories with 3 armies each. I chose not to try to break through that wall b/c to attempt that would not ensure positive results and would not weaken my opponent.

During the turns he missed, I used my deployment to build up my armies in one territory to mount an attack.

Any other questions?

I agree that this is not technically cheating, but it is damn poor sportmanship in my opinion. Maybe I am wrong. :?

he had 19 territories to your 9 or 10 when the missed turns occurred. you took 2 territories from him in that time... reducing his army bonus from 6 to 5. that reduction applied to his deferred armies, too.

the missed turns HELPED you, and HURT him. He was so far ahead of you before the missed turns, he was able to win despite the glitch.

missing the turns helped him in no way.

just accept that he was going to win regardless, and it makes no sense to skip turns on purpose in that situation. he probably REALLY DID lose connectivity.

sucks to lose, but there's no rational way to claim he cheated you.

Yeah...you also realistically had an opportunity to probably knock him down even more than you did, which may have even changed the outcome...but as scott said, the only reason you ever even had a chance was because of the missed turns....all the missed turns did, was give you a feeling of a possible win....youre probably accusing someone of cheating, who probably lost internet, which happens quite frequently.

It is possible that intentionally deadbeating can be deemed against the rules...but probably not in this case. He couldnt possibly gain anything by not coming back...and for you let this be a great lesson...ALWAYS assume another player is coming back....always.

dude, its running out the clokc, not missing turns. missing turns shows up in your attandence record. Not ending turns in a nuclear game is just annoying, but does not show up. You wont get a card, thats all...
pretty usefull if you got 4 cards with your name on it
