I agree, pretty much every male close to me has died of cancer (my dad, my best friend, and even my grandfather long before I was born) so yeah, poor taste. I have seen firsthand what cancer does to you, so it gives me a perspective some people here seem to lack

I don't come here to get a warm and fuzzy feeling from the niceness of everyone else, I come here for interesting and engaging debate. He provides quite a bit of that. I also come here for shits and giggles and he also provides some of that (though I agree, the cancer thread wasn't his best)

Annoys me quite a bit that so many people seem to not take someone's oppinions into account or even try to get someone banned because "they're kinda a dick".

The fact is that BBS did not give symm any disease, he was just discussing a hypothetical scenario.
What we are discussing really is people's feelings. It hurts someone no less to trash their beliefs as it does to discuss their dying from a horrible death. If you are going to make a comparison it should at least be about apples and apples. I'm not comparing dying in pain to religious beliefs, I was comparing the feelings involved with the discussion of each. It's hypocritical because you can't quantify one as having more weight than the other.

That's not hypocricy. In any way. Further, there are a lot of things that you can't specifically quantify, but that doesn't mean you don't lend more weight to one or the other.
