Ironic, really, how most Americans go to Canada because they don't like their government while at the same time Canadians do the exact opposite.

Maybe this American Union shit has so credit to it....

My grandmother may or may not be a legal US citizen (came across from Windsor, and smuggled in some fruit... ). O_o This amuses me to no end.

Harper has done a lot for Canada in the last two years, none of it good. (eliminating our Peacekeepers is but one example), and he's just gained power. Not good. Oh, and there's no way I'm fleeing to US even if Barack gets elected. he may be the best choice, but that's from a US standpoint, not a Canadian one.

Hmmm. I guess I knew who Stephen Harper is... and that he is conservative, but like most Americans, I don't get too wrapped up in Canadian Politics. ESPECIALLY since there is so much wrong over here. But after a quick veiwing (about 30 minutes) it does seem that he is just mirroring G. Bush Jr. doesn't it? I question how his cronies can win even more power? What was the platform? Why would Canadians vote for them?

I imagine Barack is the best choice from many standpoints. I remember doing a powerpoint that touched on Canadian/American relations for a sociology/terrorism class: let's see what I can find...

"The United States is ā€œmore like family than friends.ā€

ā€œIt is clear that Washington intends to be the architect and leader of any coalition; and that, above all, allied contributions will not result in any influence.ā€

ā€œNeither multilateral approval nor the rounding up of 'coalitions of the willing' can disguise the inescapable fact that such activities rely upon American power and are undertaken to secure American interests.ā€

I've got a reference for "Sokolsky 2004" for those quotes. The paper I was analyzing was Communicating Threat: The Canadian State and Terrorism by Brunshot and Sherley.

Good stuff.

Dude, I have been trying to figure that out for 2 elections now. There is no question that his Conservative government has mirrored the practices of republican governments in the US, and that he is not a very well-liked soul where I come from.
A Premier of one of the provinces here (a Liberal) actually ran a campaign of his own to eliminate the Conservative party from holding any seats in his province. He succeeded, but I don't think it will be to his benefit, as there will be no one in parliament to speak for NL in this government. In the Atlantic Provinces it will be like that always, as long as there is a conservative government, With the Notable exception of the Minister of Defence, who has held a seat since Christ's days.

But like him or not (and I am very far in the "or not' category), you gotta hand it to him, the man is a brilliant politician. Anyone who can't see that simple fact has been living under a rock for the past 6 years.
To achieve balance, first you must grow.
To grow, first you must learn.
To learn, first you must listen.
To listen, first you must shut the hell up.

The man point to Harper's advantage is that he's successfully protrayed his main opponent, Stephane Dion, as a bumbling idiot. Stephen Harper does elections like any american would, but his opponents play it the nice, friendly, issue-oriented way. Mudslinging wins out.

I like how you have to go to a foreign TV show to get your barb in. What, don't they make television shows in Canada? Or maybe TV is hard to pick up when your using the paddles of a moose as an antenna.

Back in the day, before the rise of DishNetwork and DirecTV, before Comcast Digital...

Back when there were black boxes and one actually had a bit of choice in cable provider, I shared a house with a group of friends, and we subscribed to something... it wasn't Comcast. Maybe Cablevision, or TimeWarner cable, I don't remember now, I just know it wasn't Comcast.

Anyway, we got the Canadian tv station that gets broadcast in the USA (like BBC America). I really enjoyed watching the news broadcasts on that channel, same as I enjoy watching BBC World News. The outsider's perspective on the news of the USA, as well as reporting about a nation I don't live in was always both enlightening and awesome.

I can't seem to find that channel anymore.

Personally, I blame Canada.

The only reason I chose the other version was that it was recorded better. Here's Rick Mercer on 'This Hour has 22 Minutes'. Happy now?

Wow... that's pretty harsh. My mom did nearly the same thing; we moved out of the city (that's right, Sentinel, we have a city too!) to rural Manitoba to live with my hunting/farming hick of a stepdad. I'm glad to be out of there, but at least he's not from Saskatchewan or Alberta.

Hey, I don't even know what a city is. I live in the middle of BFE, so you've got me there.
