No he didn't deserve to have someone break into his house. But kids don't deserve to be shot for a mistake either.

I live in the murder off and on again murder capital of Canada. We had 4.2 murders per 100,000 people last year (population of 120,000 and 5 murders). Do I feel unsafe in my own home? Nope. Our doors are unlocked when we are home, no matter the time of day. In fact the other night I left my garage door open all night by accident (the kids have a rec room out there with a PS3 and TV as well as 5 bikes, 2 lawnmowers, 1 snowblower, 3 set of hockey equipment and a bunch of other stuff) and when I realized it the next morning I didn't even panic as I knew everything would still be there, and sure enough it was. We're not armed up here and I am okay with that.

haha...you make it sound like your town is the Wild West. 4.2 murders per 100k is nothing in the US. New Orleans, the highest in the US, has literally 10 times as many murders.

Well, no country has as big of a racial divide as ours. And I don't mean all blacks hate whites and vice versa, it's just that there are so many stupid fucking extremists on both sides...they just ruin everything for the rest of us.

And this is precisely why I'm going ot move to Greenland. Also, because if there's a nuclear war, Greenland will go untouched.

Hopefully they have hot babes in Greenland, though.

And yet I live in the city in Canada that has the highest murder rate in the country. What does that say about the gun mentality and how it relates to murders int he USA? I can't find the actual figures, but none of the 5 murders last year were caused by a firearm. They were beatings or stabbings.

Oh I see...being sarcastic makes your point...funny? Or less truthful?

Canada has stronger handgun laws than the USA. The USA has a murder rate 3 to 4 times higher than Canada. Why could that be?

I guess what probably bothers me the most is that they rang the doorbell, in all likelyhood, for that specific purpose.

Sure they're bad kids; but I just cant get my head around the way the America rationalises putting holes in people so easily.

Like I say im happy to have a slightly higher chance of my stuff getting stolen to avoid tradegies like this.

Here's a different perspective to look at: how can someone get their head around the idea that it's ok to break into other people's homes and steal their stuff and potentially hurt or kill them.

That's why I think an exception for preservation of the mother's life or guaranteed death after birth of the child is acceptable. Otherwise, abortions are performed out of convenience, not out of self defense. There is a HUGE difference.

Can its DNA be recognized as human and unique from any other person? If so, then it is a unique human and will grow into a person.

There is no shortage of guns in Canada, but they are actually used for hunting. In the US there's plenty of guns that people "claim" are purchased for hunting, but assault rifles and other semi-autoshit weapons are typically owned by "urban pioneers" and not sportsman.

FYI about the Dallas shooting last week. The homeowner is in his mid 70's and over the last decade there have been too many home invasions targeting elderly people in Dallas County while they are at home. In most of these instances the occupants have been savagely beaten and left in critical condition by their attackers.

No, it will turn into a person. It doesn't mean that the person survives all the way to birth and to 80 years old, but it is still a unique set of human DNA.

"I can't find the actual figures, but none of the 5 murders last year were caused by a firearm. They were beatings or stabbings."

I just find that statement to be hilarious. In Canada, no one was murdered by a gun! They were murdered by beatings or stabbings... (people still died, get it?)

Regarding your question, the way the USG handles the war on drugs may explain the variance of the murder rate between Canada and the US. I assume that there's a much larger market of drugs in the US per capita compared to Canada, and that the way the US government addresses the drug trade merely exacerbates the violence. Contract disputes in a black market can't seek recourse in the court of law; therefore, violence becomes the "best" option. That would explain much of the variance.

If you took away civilians guns or increased the barriers to trade for civilians to obtain guns, would that affect the black markets? By what magnitude? For the US, I'd predict that mimicking Canadian gun control laws would hardly affect the black markets. Already, in New Orleans, you can get a handgun for $25 to $50. Maybe that price would rise to $75? Maybe criminals would find substitutes and still engage in their trades?

In my opinion, the "lack of civilian legal ownership of guns" and "murder rate" correlation does not explain the causes.

Do you suppose that anything that can be destroyed immediately cannot be human? Or cannot be a person?
Is being a human different than being a person? What is the difference?

I like this follow up you provided. It shows that he had some reason to fear for his life.

If we outlawed guns it would be very difficult to get the guns out of the hands of those who would break the law. Personally, I think the US is too big. We should be broken down into smaller countries. Like AoG said we are too diverse by political views. Smaller countries with like minded people might spread out the extremists.

That's why we have 50 different states, except that the federal government keeps coming in and saying they can trump anything the state wants to do or just mandates that the states do what it tells them to do.

That fits in with my argument. Which is why I say we should be broken up into smaller countries. Our votes don't really count, even if we move to another state we are still largely affected by the Federal Government. If it was as it should be and the states and cities actually had the correct number of representatives, that were actually able to do things on a local level without the Feds interfering other than military and large foreign diplomacy type stuff.

American Cities and States do plenty on the local and regional level and all States need help from time to time from a bigger entity than themselves. United we stand... divided we fall.
