He is imporatant, without him taking the throne, Lyra would have never met Iorek.

True, but in that thinking, EVERYTHING becomes important.
Then again, fate made it, because of the prophecy and such..Therefor, they were ment to met. So the character os iofur is less important. Still is, but compared to Iorek, especially if you look at the trilogy as a whole.
