Oh...you mean like Freud, who used cocaine as a way to find out about dreams?

Or Shelley? or De Quincy? Kerouac? Dylan? Hendrix?

Actually i'm just going to quote Bill Hicks again:

If you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, then go home and burn all your records, all your tapes, and all your CDs... because every one of those artists who have made brilliant music and enhanced your lives? Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreal fucking high on drugs...

That system works better since you can't really tax it and the gov't stays out of the transaction.

If you legalize it, the first thing your going to do is put pot in the hands of large corporations.

yeah, those large corporations, the ones that get labels like "capitalist bastards" and get those labels for a reason. If marijuana gets legalized, I predict a short drop in price for it, and then a sharp and definite increase of the price.

Then, as is the way with all capitalist companies, these 'marijuana companies' will sell try to sell less for more. There are 2 easy ways they could do this:

1. Sell worse weed. This means the potency or the percent of THC in the weed will drop. Currently, "good" weed that you can find normally, has a THC percent of 13-20%. I could see the THC percent in legalized weed drop 5 percent to 7-14% for good weed.
This is still not as bad as the weed in the 60s, which was, according to research, 4-10%.

Why would this happen you ask?

two reasons. One is that, if the weed is less potent, then you'll have to buy more in order to have the same affect. Buying more weed means more money for the companies.
The second reason is that the amount of THC in a growing weed plant increases as the plant ripens. One of the biggest complexities of growing weed (and this, i've done quite a bit of research on) is exactly whent to harvest the weed. If you harvest late, the amount of weed you will get goes down. And, if you harvest to early, the THC percent won't be as high. Therefore, its easily stipulated that large(or even small!) companies will harvest the weed way too early in order for a quicker profit.

2.mix in other substances along with the weed when it is retailed.

whats this you ask?

well you only have to look at the difference between tobacco and ciggarettes to realize that, when large coporations get their hands on an addictive product like tobacco(which isn't to say weed is even close to as addictive as tobacco) they can f*ck it up. Ciggaretes are MUCH more lethal than tobacco, and I would bet that a large corporation that sold marijuana would do something similar, if not identical, to this.
why? so they can make more money while selling less product.

SOOooo.
you may be saying, ignorantly, "oh man, legalized pot, oh boy!" but, as soon as you take your heads out of your wonderfully idealistic asses, and look at the situation realistically, you might realize that legalizing weed would be one of the worst things to happen to marijuana.

What about legalizing (or more accurately, decriminlaizing) marijuana as a means to rectify the ridiculous judicial system in your country that fills up its jails with petty pot offenders? It's not just about you and your buzz, man. Marijuana was made criminal by the UNited States based on one idiot's (Harry Aslinger) false information and racial biases. Wouldn't you like to see that rectified, and see less innocent potheads go to jail, even if it cost you an extra five bucks an eighth?

Actually it was illegalized because they wanted a reason to search who they considered to be illegal immigrants.

I still don't see a valid argument from the side of the law-keepers.

A free market in weed would makes prices drop...

Competition! Buying legalised weed would be liek buying beer. You could buy from a mass-producer for very little, a company that grows and packages it in bulk, keeping their costs down, or you could buy specialised strains from conoisseur growers, the equivalent of microbreweries.
remeber that right now, growers are charging for the secrecy, risk and entailed hassle of doing what they do.

Who are you speaking to? I never suggested WHY it was criminalized only that it was done in an unscrupulous manner using bogus "facts". Even if what you say is true (and that's HIGHLY debatable however irrelevant), you must still see the ridiculousness in maintaining the prohibition of marijuana today on those grounds.

But I guess if you can still get pot at ten bucks a gram, who gives a shit who rots unceremoniously in jail for such a petty offense, right?

Quite possible. And if you've ever been to the Netherlands and smoke there (where it's nearly completely legal), you could personally attest to the high quality of weed grown/hashish made on the open market.

Weed here is roughly 6 euros a gram, and has almost 3 times the amount of THC in it.

I think the biggest problem with legalizing though is that the government will raise taxes "to protect our health" like they do with cigarrettes.

There ya go...

I had a Doctor once rebuke me in his office for smoking, telling me that all smokers are a drain on federal tax dollars that go towards healthcare and a waste of hospital beds that could be used for something more respectable than "idiots who kill themselves smoking". I nearly stabbed him in the femoral artery with a tongue depressor when he said this. Instead I kindly reminded him of how much tax I pay on the bloody fags every fucking day and that I feel like I've more contributed my fair share. I thought the indignant cocksucker was going to tell me to get out of his office, I couldn't believe it.

I have indeed spent several terrified afternoons curled up in a whimpering, paranoid ball after overdoing the Jack Herer in various Leidseplein coffeeshops. That is some strong shit. Ah, memories.

Undoubtedly, but the system encourages you to push yourself to an utterly ecervellized state of vegetative dumbness through excess. This is like you saying that drinking hard alcohol every friday is good because all these great people have in the past drunken alcohol!

No, it's like saying that drinking or taking drugs do not nceessarily turn you into a state-sponsored zombie.
Quite apart from the silliness of your argument, obviously. Are you suggesting that every government anti-drug initiative and dollar spent on policing, confiscating and intercepting drugs and arresting suppliers and dealers just an exercise in reverse psychology? Dude, are you high?

And who, or what, is this 'system' who controls my life so?

15, 2a* (thus far).

Why might I enquire? Just, not to be indiscrete, just its fascinating to imagine a teacher smoking cannabis, from a psycho-analytical viewpoint....?

Firstly, I'm a historian. Not a teacher. I teach a few undergrad classes but primarily I am a historian.

And as for your age, Nappy, it was to clarify that you probably have very little experience of the vast majority of the 'adult' (and I mean this entirely non-patronisingly) working and social world. To make some of the statements and claims you make at the age of 15, especially the judgements you just made about my life and occupation, says a lot.
