Ow! that hurts - but I think I've admitted elsewhere that any deficiency in the look of the maps is the fault of the user (me), not the package used (GIMP).
Anyway, I thought I'd see if the Legion idea had any support before trying to produce a half-way decent image for inclusion in a separate thread.
All advice, suggestions or help welcome.

Another approach I was thinking of using was to present the map as a marching fort or camp.

No, the fort idea is to provide a structure and graphiical environment within which the organizational and command elements of the legion can be displayed.
