This map was created by grayhawke in January 2008. Unit_2 joined the conception team in April. I joined in may and take over the thread in august.

Holy Roman Empire 1648

This map is based upon the boundaries set for mainland Europe following the Peace of Westphalia in 1648.

There are 42 territories forming 7 "regions"
Four empire "regions":
- Sachsenkreis...territories=9.....bonus=4
- Burgundkreis...territories=7.....bonus=3
- Innenkreis.... .territories=5.....bonus=3
- Österkreis......territories=8.....bonus=5
Three bordering states "regions"
- Westeuropa....territories=4.....bonus=3
- Südeuropa......territories=5.....bonus=3
- Osteuropa.......territories=4.....bonus=2

Extra bonuses are given for controlling "areas of influence" (from an idea suggested by iancanton). Each such area consists of 3 territories which were controlled by one of the powers of the time; there are 5 such powers giving 15 territories in total for the "areas of influence". A player who controls all 15 wins.

i like this idea though theres stuff to be done, here is what i see:

1. Take out all the borders that run over Mts. , Rivers, Etc.

2. Make the map 600X600, this map will fit into it.

3. Use a better tool, i like http://www.gimp.org the best, its easy to use and gots lots of textures that can work for this map.

4. Take as much of the non-playable parts of the map out and also take the names off them and make then white, grey or dark grey.

5. Redraw over the lines, there is white pixels all over them.(do this first in MS Paint(paint).

Other then that it looks good.

Will do this for Version 3.

I'm afraid the fault lies with the artist, not the graphics package. I agree, Gimp is the best, and I'll try to make better use of it for the next version.

Version 3 will include a general tidying-up, though I won't be using MS Paint since I run Linux and use open-source software wherever possible.

My initial idea has split into two related but different maps.

The original thread became a map of the HRE only; no bordering states. The poll suggested some support for the HRE+bordering states - so I started this thread.

you should add an extra bonus for controlling all of the HRE.


The mountians nowlook like plateuas.

The river looks like ice.

You need to work on the mouth of the river.

Other than that the map looks beautiful. Besided for my requests, I say QUENCH!

Aside from the large topic title making it impossible for us to tag this I like it.

I think the quality of the legend would be greatly improved if the bouneses area was in even columns, but that's obvious.

I also think those circles in the legend could benefit being under the same texture effects as their corresponding areas of the map. To further help our color blind players.

Thanks - it's been quite a learning curve.

As for the border colour, I was using red to mark the HRE boundary and black for other borders. Should I keep this difference (mentioning it in the legend?) or just choose a single colour (red) ?

-I would use only one background texture (possibly the crincled paper you have on france), the cofee beans just doesn't do it.
-pretty much like the mountains
-Legend needs a lot of improvement but that can wait for now
-Boarders. My program is gimp as well and i know what an absolute bugger they can be to change but i would still reccomend starting again with a 3 pix paintbrush (and put that layer on top of your colour layers so they dont eat into the edges when you use the fill tool)
-the seas are pretty fine as they are but i found the marble texture looked pretty nice on my maps.

I disagree with this one, you do that you risk running into color blind issues. The combination of a different texture and color for each part helps solve that and is my favorite part of this right now.

Correct - but Venice (Venetian Republic) was one of the bordering states in 1648.

In terms of gameplay you're right. I guess 17th century European history isn't of interest to a wide audience.

In terms of graphics the support has been great; I'd like to thank everyone who has helped turn my original mess into a half-way decent map.
