Is there? Really? The concept that Santa Claus doesn't exist (while its perfectly alright to lie to the kids and then crush them when you reveal the lie) is easier to swallow than God not existing? Imagine that you're 5 and all your life you've been told that there is a guy named Santa and he gives you stuff. Then imagine that your parents tell you that Santa isn't real, they just made it up. How mortified would you be? How long would it take you to accept it?

Which is why my children know that there is no Santa.

It's the same thing, only you've been believing in God for longer, so the indoctrination goes real deep. That's why when someone comes around with some evidence and yells "God does not exist" you immediately go into attack mode and begin browbeating that guy with biblical quotes and dogma hoping that he'll stop challenging the defining strand of your life and leave you alone.

No, I didn't come to know God until I was 13 years old. (and my parents came to know Him about the same time so you can't use "You were raised that way" argument)

However, on the grand scale of things, IT'S THE SAME DAMN THING! The belief in Santa is as real to a 5 year old as God is to you so stop trivializing widely held beliefs just because you don't happen to share them. It may seem like bunk to you, but to a child it's as real as Jesus and the Crucifixion so shaddap already.

It's not the same thing! ONE EXISTS and the other DOESN'T! Its all good, you still have time. Just don't take your last breath thinking the way you currently do.

When large groups of people believe in non-existant things, whatever they may be, I find that highly disturbing. You stated that the majority believe in your diety...therefor they must be on to something, or somehow be correct due to the number of people involved. Thats a very weak argument.

Many people believe in UFO's but that doesnt make them real.

13 is a highly impressionable age. I still say you were raised that way. I highly doubt that when your parents were indoctrinated they said "Let's let Jay objectivly choose for himself when he is older" and just let you make your own choices about going to church, saying grace, praying, and any other rituals. More than likely you were told "this is the way" and told you would go to hell, etc if you didnt fall inline...just as you do with us.

And I take the next step and say both dont.

Good.

No, I didn't come to know God until I was 13 years old. (and my parents came to know Him about the same time so you can't use "You were raised that way" argument)

And how old are you now? Mid 30s early 40s? That's 20-30 years. Most children live with the Santa myth for around 5-10 years. You may not have been raised with it, but you've sure been in the club for a while.

And I don't respond to threats my friend, even if you don't consider them threats.

A belief in God is no different than a belief in Santa, the only possible difference being that no one has ever been shunned, fired, or publicly ridiculed for not believing in Santa Claus.

The tooth fairy, The easter bunny, and Santa are all fictional characters created through either commercialization, the gentle warping of an icon (St. Nicholas into Santa) or a misappropriation of pagan imagery by early Christians eager to convert heathens ("Bunnies are for shagging, eggs are for fertility, it's the spring festival"). Christian God is a mishmash of incoherent concepts that are adjusted slightly to suit the needs of the defender.

I believe that Christian God is not God. Christian God (C-God to his homies) seems to be too open to interpretation and too incompetent to be considered a God. At the very best He's an egregore [a magickal device/servitor created by a group rather than an individual, further information here.) and at the very least He's fiction. Real God doesn't want or need money, prayer, devotion, or followers. The disciples followed Jesus around because A) Jesus had a lot of good ideas and was a groovy cat to hang with and B) They didn't have the guts to admit to themselves that they had no original ideas.

Jesus wasn't the Son of God, but he was far beyond his (or even our) time. Until Christians can stop using Jesus as an excuse for whatever they say or do then I will continue to consider Christian God as a group creation rather than an immutable force. Forgive me for having a mind crafted from the dual crucibles of Atheism and Catholicism before venturing out and finding my own truth for myself. There should be as many religions as there are people, but some are unwilling to trust themselves and so they turn to C-God, Allah, YHVH, or some other hive mind creation.

Someone give this guy a medal. Well crafted arguements from a rational mind. I really hope you're in the US, then I might not be so worried about the fundamentalism rising from there.

I'm not only a proud, patriotic American, but I'm also from Florida. We screwed up elections years before Ohio got around to it!

How do you cope with the news programs you get there. True, I've only seen the big networks (CNN and the like) but I actually put it on for a laugh these days. Do people take it serously and why don't people complain.

Those of us who don't watch them just ignore them and make fun of them. Personally I watch The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report since irony is always funny. It's passive parody on my part and I support it.

Those that do watch those shows with any sort of regularity do take them seriously. I'll admit that from time to time I'll watch one of them for a bit, but then I turn over to cartoons and notice the lack of any substantial difference.

Most of them (Hannity and Colmes, O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, etc.) are so full of themselves that it's just funny to watch them pretend. It really is so pathetic and sad that it becomes funny, kind of a tragic comedy.

Why don't people complain? Because it's so much easier to just make fun of them and point and laugh whenever one of them gets caught in a sex scandal or popping pills.

Its a sad day when you read stuff like that. And a 12 year old none the less. Hope? Hope for what? A Godless society? They are all over the world. Move if it bothers you so much. (in about 8 years, when you're older)
