Derby 0-0 Sunderland

Sunderland failed to register their first away win of the season thanks to a contentious offside decision which ruled out Michael Chopra's finish.

Andy Reid crossed low from the left for Chopra to sidefoot past Derby keeper Roy Carroll on 38 minutes but referee Mike Riley disallowed his effort.

Moments later Derby captain Alan Stubbs nearly backheeled into his own goal.

Derby battled hard with Kenny Miller lively but are still searching for their first win under Paul Jewell.

n charge for 13 games before Sunderland's visit to Pride Park, Jewell rang the changes as his side battles against recording the lowest ever Premier League points total.

Midfielder Mile Sterjovski started his first game since his recent move from Genclerbirligi, while Eddie Lewis, Marc Edworthy and Emanuel Villa were all recalled.

The changes appeared to have little effect defensively as Daryl Murphy brought down Nyron Nosworthy's long punt and crashed a curling shot against the stricken Roy Carroll's post on four minutes.

But Derby responded immediately.

After Kenny Miller was booked for hacking down Kenwyne Jones the Scotland striker cleverly spUn inside the box and turned a half-volley just wide.

With animated Sunderland boss Roy Keane cajoling his players from the sidelines, the end-to-end action increased as Derby passed the ball well while Murphy and Michael Chopra flashed headers past the post.

Kieron Richardson, returning after a long injury lay-off, wasted a free-kick on 32 minutes blasting high and wide but Sunderland had the ball in the goal moments later.

With Derby's defence static, Andy Reid cushioned a low cross across the box for Chopra to sidefoot neatly past Carroll from 12 yards but man in the middle Riley blew for offside - a marginal decision.

The Rams had another let-off just before half-time when Danny Higginbotham stretched to volley a cross into the box. Reid flicked it on and Derby skipper Alan Stubbs inadvertently back-heeled the ball inches past his own goal.

Sunderland came out stronger after the break and carved out more chances but Kenwyne Jones, in acres of space, proved wasteful when shooting weakly into Carroll's arms from just outside the box.

Jewell made a series of substitutions early in the second-half in an attempt to turn the tide but, aside from a goalmouth scramble involving Marc Edworthy and Miller, Derby were struggling to break into the opposition penalty area.

As the competitive spirit of the game escalated the quality dropped and numerous stoppages broke up the play with yellow cards handed to Chopra and Darren Moore.

Miller, lacking support up front, fired over on the half-volley from outside the box and Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon had to punch clear off his forehead from a deep cross.

Either side could have stolen a late winner as the game became more open in the final seconds and substitute Hossam Ghaly made a superb block to deny Danny Higginbotham.

But both sets of defenders stood resolute to earn a point for their respective sides.

Fulham 0-3 Man Utd

Manchester United cruised past Fulham and closed to within one point of Premier League leaders Arsenal.

United rested Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, but Owen Hargreaves set them on their way to victory with a 20-yard free-kick after 15 minutes.

They missed a host of chances before Ji-Sung Park headed in Paul Scholes' cross a minute before the interval.

Fulham's misery was complete when Simon Davies turned John O'Shea's cross into his own net 18 minutes from time.

Ronaldo and Rooney were rested in readiness for the Champions League clash with Lyon at Old Trafford on Tuesday - but it did little to disturb United's rhythm in a first 45 minutes they dominated with embarrassing ease.

Louis Saha should have put United ahead after only five minutes when he was sent clear by a raking Scholes pass, but he was hopelessly off target with only Fulham keeper Antti Niemi to beat.

It was only a matter of time before United took the lead, and so it proved on 15 minutes when Brede Hangeland fouled Carlos Tevez and Hargreaves clipped a clever free-kick past Niemi from 20 yards.

Nani then shot narrowly wide and Scholes saw a header well saved by Niemi as United threatened to over-run Roy Hodgson's troubled side.

United's failure to take their chances almost cost them 12 minutes before the interval when Danny Murphy escaped his markers but saw a point-blank header blocked by Edwin van der Sar.

The champions doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Park met Scholes' cross with a firm header to leave Fulham facing a mammoth task.

Fulham made little or no impact in the early stages of the second half, and United demonstrated their squad strength after 68 minutes, sending on Rooney and Ronaldo for Tevez and Saha.

United were still in the ascendancy and Niemi had to be sharp to save low down from Park as he drove into the danger zone.

The game was finished as a contest with 18 minutes left when Davies unluckily diverted O'Shea's shot past Niemi at the near post for United's third.

Middlesbrough 0-1 Reading

James Harper's injury-time goal gave Reading victory and ended their run of eight straight Premier League defeats.

Middlesbrough had the majority of the chances but Harper scored with an unchallenged strike from six yards out after a pass from Stephen Hunt.

Boro's Tuncay Sanli and Stewart Downing were a threat, but new signing Afonso Alves forced the best save of the first half from a dipping free-kick.

Downing was booked late on for trying to win a penalty for the visitors.

Reading began positively, embarking on a number of forays into Boro's half without posing any serious threat on goal.

The Royals' best effort in the opening exchanges came when Liam Rosenior crossed accurately from the left only for Sean Long to direct his close-range header over the bar.

Reading's finishing in recent times had been a cause for concern, with none of their strikers having scored in 2008.

Hunt's miss, with his shot ballooning high over the bar, was symptomatic of their problems.

Although Boro were seven points ahead of their opponents at the start of play, there was not a marked difference in the play of both sides.

That was to change midway through the opening half, with the home side gaining the ascendancy.

Middlesbrough's most likely source of a goal looked to be Downing, who had two long-range efforts comfortably saved by Marcus Hahnemannn.

Downing was a constant threat and was again involved when he rounded the advancing Hahnemann only to see his cross blocked.

That near-miss seemed to stir Reading into life.

Kevin Doyle put the ball in the back of the net but had the goal disallowed after Andre Bikey was ruled to have fouled Mark Schwarzer.

Boro bounced back but Luke Young failed to hit the target following a slick passing move with George Boateng and Tuncay while an Alves free-kick forced a sharp save from Hahnemann.

Both teams demonstrated great levels of energy but there was a distinct lack of quality at times.

However, Harper showed great composure in the closing moments racing on to Hunt's pass and calmly placing the ball past Schwarzer.

But Coppell will be delighted with this victory that ends his side's dismal run and gives them renewed hope.

Newcastle 0-1 Blackburn

A late Matt Derbyshire strike denied Newcastle a deserved draw and piled more misery on manager Kevin Keegan.

Michael Owen almost put Newcastle ahead in the first half but pushed his shot wide after rounding Brad Friedel.

The keeper denied Owen twice more after the break tipping the striker's header over and then pushing away his drive.

Rovers were dangerous on the break but Andre Ooijers's volley was saved and Roque Santa Cruz was off target before Derbyshire ran clear to fire home.

Derbyshire's late strike was a killer blow and harsh on Newcastle, who had shown positive, attacking flair throughout the match.

Newcastle drove at the Blackburn defence right from the whistle with wide men James Milner and Damien Duff at the heart of it all.

Within the first five minutes, Milner pulled the ball back for Duff who squeezed his shot just wide of Friedel's post.

Alan Smith latched onto Milner's ball into the box but his header looped over the bar before Milner saw his shot skim wide.

Newcastle skipper Owen ran clear to carve out another chance for Duff, but the Irish winger saw another effort scrambled clear by the Rovers' defence.

Blackburn were not going to lie down under the pressure but equally there was little build-up play from the visitors and their best chances came on the break.

Stephen Warnock's long-range drive was well off-target and Ooijer's shot also skimmed wide.

England midfielder David Bentley almost started something when he sent Santa Cruz through, but his lofted pass to Benni McCarthy was safely collected by Steve Harper, deputising for the injured Shay Given.

Keegan was then left flapping on the sidelines when Owen looked a certainty to score as he collected Joey Barton's pass and rounded Friedel, only for his final shot to skip across the face of the goal.

Blackburn applied some late first-half pressure, but Harper punched away Morten Gamst Pedersen's corner and was alert again to block another Ooijer volley.

Newcastle came out after the break with the same determined attitude but Keegan was left shaking his head again as Milner and Duff's best efforts to break through were thwarted by Rovers' rigid defence.

A moment of rash defending from Stephen Taylor almost let Blackburn in at the other end when Santa Cruz picked up the loose ball, then skied it over the bar.

Harper also made an important block at his near post when Pedersen met Bentley's deep cross with a volley.

As Newcastle drove on, Smith screwed his effort across the goal before Owen was denied twice by Friedel.

First, Owen headed Nicky Butt's pass but the American keeper tipped the goal-bound shot over. Then Owen's rampaging run came to nothing when Friedel sunk to the grass to push clear his final shot.

The England striker was denied a third time by Blackburn's tenacious defence and Milner saw his tame shot saved by Friedel and another decent effort blocked.

Frustrations boiled over towards the end of the match, when Habib Beye and Morten Gamst Pedersen tussled over who had been awarded a throw-in.

After a mass 'discussion' between both teams, Beye and Pedersen were cautioned but the real drama was still to come.

Following another surge forward by Newcastle, Rovers launched a counter-raid as Bentley unleashed substitute Derbyshire.

The forward ran clear and hit a clean ball beyond Harper in the 90th minute to keep Blackburn's push for Europe on track.

The result leaves Keegan still searching for his first win, and probably wondering just what his team have to do to earn it.

West Ham 0-4 Chelsea

Chelsea had Frank Lampard red-carded but romped to victory at West Ham.

Lampard's penalty after Salomon Kalou was fouled by Anton Ferdinand put his side ahead before Joe Cole angled in a precise shot for Chelsea's second.

Michael Ballack expertly half-volleyed in a third for the visitors, who had Lampard harshly red-carded for a push on Luis Boa Morte after 36 minutes.

Carlton Cole had a shot cleared off the line for West Ham but Ashley Cole's acute shot wrapped up Chelsea's win.

Blues boss Avram Grant had taken a swipe at the media in the run-up to the game, angry at negative coverage following the Carling Cup final loss to Tottenham.

And he showed little mercy with his team selection either as he made six changes to the starting XI.

The Blues should have been a goal up after two minutes when Nicolas Anelka had a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside.

The Frenchman thought he had scored when he slotted home after John Terry's header had been parried.

But Chelsea did not have long to wait to take the lead, with Hammers centre-back Ferdinand conceding a penalty for a trip on Kalou.

Lampard stepped up to send Robert Green the wrong way for the first of three Chelsea goals in the space five minutes.

Joe Cole added a second, showing fine control before firing a shot into the far corner of the net, before Ballack lashed home a low shot after being picked out by a Lampard cross.

Chelsea had virtually sealed victory over the Hammers with just 22 minutes on the clock, showing more fluency and attacking flair than in 120 minutes of action against Spurs.

The home side did manage to test Petr Cech, the goalkeeper tipping over a Mark Noble shot.

But Chelsea remained untroubled, even after Lampard was red-carded.

The midfielder tangled on the ground with Boa Morte and then pushed the winger after appearing to get caught by a kick.

Referee Peter Walton consulted his assistant before brandishing his red card and then booked Ballack for his part in the melee that ensued.

Another Noble strike was headed away as the home side tried to capitalise on their numerical advantage, but Chelsea held out until half-time.

West Ham struggled to create chances, but Carlton Cole must have thought he had scored when he dinked the ball over the on-rushing Cech only for Terry to clear off the line.

Ashley Cole then made it 4-0 when he sidefooted home from a tight angle after Joe Cole's shot had been parried.

The goal was the sign for Hammers fans to start trudging for the exit, their team emphatically beaten.

Hereford 0-1 Stockport

A penalty from Stockport's leading marksman Liam Dickinson was enough to make it seven away wins in a row.

The Hatters started more positively at Edgar Street but Hereford should have taken the lead when Theo Robinson and Ben Smith had clear chances to score.

But the Hatters deservedly went in front in the 54th minute when Dickinson scored low from the spot after being fouled by John McCombe in the area.

Stockport lived dangerously allowing Robinson to head close late on.

(Update from the Croatian First Division)
What a game...
RIJEKA - DINAMO: 2 - 4

Rijeka (second on the table) against Dinamo Zagreb (first on table).

Dinamo scored in 57th second: great goal by great player - Luka Modrić. Dinamo went to half-time with 2 goal lead (header by Vrdoljak).
In the second half Rijeka replied with two goals: Škoro (77th minute) and Šafarić's free-kick (80th minute). By that time I thought it went all to hell!

But...

82nd minute Mihael Mikić scored for Dinamo. Then Rijeka went va banque and Dinamo punished that with another goal.

Now Dinamo is first with only 15 points ahead of second Rijeka!

Oh yeah of course, whenever Becks comes to town that 25k in an 80k stadium jumps to 80k in an 80k stadium. And derbies go to about 50k.

On that note, the Red Bulls are going for Luca Toni for the summer transfers.
