Snakes and Ladders

Postby Tieryn on Mon Mar 03, 2008 6:59 am

How about a snakes and ladders map? Lets see what we can make out of...

Image

Rundown:
100 territories
Territories attack next adjacent numbers, 1->2, 2->3, 3->4 etc.
One way attacks "up" ladders
One way attacks "down" snakes
Perhaps something like Dice Territories (with dice on them) can bombard bottom row? (to make up for the fact that 1-6 once taken can't be taken back.
Also perhaps another rule for what counter territories can do. Perhaps bombard any territory of that colour?

Possible Bonuses:
By required territories in a line or column:
Hold 4 = +1
Hold 6 = +2
Hold 8 = +3
Hold 10 = +4
Hold x = (x-2)/2 Integer Truncated

By required territories of the same colour (Yellow/White/Red/Blue/Green) [20 of each]
Hold 5 = +1
Hold 8 = +2
Hold 11 = +3
Hold 14 = +4
Hold 17 = +5
Hold 20 = +6
Hold x = (x-2)/3 Integer Truncated

Also might want to implement some kind of staggered bonus structure for territories such as in Conquer Man...?

What do people think so far? Am I giving too many bonuses? Could we maybe do this map without bonuses and be purely on territories, but unlike circus maximus, have enough territories for people to get decent bonuses?

Also just thought of "Snake pair" and "Ladder Pair" as possible bonuses. Holding both ends of a snake and/or ladder = +1

And here's the first update from the initial concept, Added in bonuses and directions as specified so far. Change is possible. Please discuss.

i'd actually been thinking about that as a map for approx 2 weeks now. so yes, i think it would be a great idea.

i'd vote for coloured territory can attack/bombard similar colour anywhere on map. if not, move the dice higher so it becomes difficult to lock in the bottom of the map.

I was also working on this in my mind but as stated above you snooze you lose. It looks to be interesting gameplay with a large number of territories.

Good luck

it looks like you just took someone else's image for snakes and ladders and turned that into a CC map. If so, that's a no no. Original artwork.

I would suggest only the color bonuses or only the line/collumn bonuses.

Also, since many territories can only be attacked by one other, and only attack one territory, the board might feel a bit limited. But that also might make it sort of interesting.

Since "Finish" cannot attack anything, might I recommend allowing it some sort of special feature?

I took someone elses image for snakes and ladders and turned it into a CC-draft... :P It's squares, ladders and snakes, all of which I'll photoshop up along the way, but as a draft, I'm sure you can allow the photo. But now that I know it's not CC (as in, PC... but for CC?) I'll make sure I get on to that soon.

I was wondering if Finish should be able to attack 1... kind of a "start new game" thing? Make the whole map a bit cyclic... one long circus maximus? :P

Cheers :) did you have any ideas on gameplay you'd like to share or was it still mostly conceptual?

Mostly conceptual. I was only going to allow territories to atack up or down tot eh next number. Up teh ladders and down teh snakes. That is it.

Then blocks of bounus groups placed around the board. Not much more than an idea in mz head however.

It would be an infringement on the copyright of whoever made the artwork (unless I got their express permission I believe?) but the game is a classic, and I don't think it is owned by any one company.

wikipedia wrote:History

The game was played widely in ancient India by the name of Moksha Patamu, the earliest known Jain version Gyanbazi dating back to 16 century. Impressed by the ideals behind the game, a newer version was introduced in Victorian England in 1892, possibly by John Jacques of Jacques of London.

I'm pretty sure copyright expires after 500 years.

this idea has been attempted at least twice - somebody should search for the old threads and see what problems we've run into before.

I found one thread, seems it ran out of steam from the creator.. rather than ran into any problems. Couldnt' find the other one, but what I'm currently doing is significantly more advanced that either of those two, so I feel happy keeping on working on it... as long as there is interest... would people play this map?

Here's my first attempt at my own version of a snakes and ladders. All original artwork.

I've made columns single coloured, so that will be one possible bonus (as well as an "all reds bonus, 2 columns" etc. And single rows will be a bonus, 1-10, 10-20, etc.

These will probably be requirements bonuses, ie, hold 5 in a single row, get +whatever, 7, get +x, 9 get +y, 10 get +z etc.

Can I get comments on how the snake is looking so far?

The texture for the snake is nice, but it could use a more "rounded" look.

And you realize that red and yellow will be the easiest for one player to take groups of, right?

To solve the thing about 1-6 not being able to be attacked, why don't you loop it – so the highest number can attack 1?

By "rounded" do you mean like, 3 dimensional rounding? to make it into more of a stand out snake rather than a flat one? or do you mean the scales more round-like? Either I'm sure can be done, but i don't know how to make things 3d (yet). If anyone is any good at this and can help, please drop me a pm!

Why would it be the easiest? Because of locations on the sides? Then the bonus can be less, or I can work out some sort of bombard thing that will fair-en things up.

That's an idea I've considered, and will probably implement, either with a snake, or with a rule.
