1776!

Postby Elijah S on Sat Mar 08, 2008 11:15 pm

I'm baaaaaack!

Hello all!
After a hiatus of a few months, I've finally taken up another project and think it's a good idea to post it here and see what kind of input comes in.

***Note - This is in the very preliminary stages.***

Map: 1776 - The American Revolution.
(I know there's another map of this theme being worked on already, but the topic is one that interests me and that I feel I can do justice to.)

I've not yet drawn in the territories, as I'm working on how to assemble them into continents and such. -Again, this is a first draft.

Unlike most other CC Maps, in which players must take all to win, the objective of this map will be to unite the thirteen colonies. -First one to do so, wins!

Bonus groupings will be: England, France, Spain, Native American tribes, Northern Colonies, Middle Colonies, Southern Colonies and Western Settlements.

Opinions and Ideas welcome...
Thanks for checking it out!

Concept is alright, but did Spain really play a part in the American Revolution or is this a mix of "New World" and the Revolution? What about the Hessians instead? No Monmouth, Saratoga or Yorktown? Seems that the possibilities on this one needs to be explored more.

Perhaps a few more ideas can be garnered from Avalon Hill's We The People, which would be a great match for Conquer Club. If I had any talent, I'd take this on. Maybe when I sit down and actually take the time to learn new techniques.

That's actually not true... the Spanish actually fought around the Gulf of Mexico and southern Mississippi River area... not to mention giving aid and supplies to the rebels.

this is the third attempt at this map, and thus far all 3 have looked incredibly similar.

stop being a troll. Also, you should be the LAST person to talk about copying.

I'm interested to hear Elijah's response to some of the historical questions.

Also, do you plan on just doing the thirteen colonies and some surrounding territories (plus the ones you've already put) ?

Not much done on the map so not much to comment on sadly.

Bryguy... This is hardly a copy. Unlike yours, I did not pull this from Lux and claim it as original...
As for it not looking that good...you're entitled to your opinion, but I think, for a first draft, it looks damned good.
Also, the flag in the upper right corner is actually a 13 star flag, which IS accurate for the period.

Unit 2 - If I were to place 6 Iroquois territories it would pretty much turn it into an Iroquois map wouldn't it? The Native Territories are purposely made smaller than their actual nations at the time because I want to include them, but not center the play around them.

Fireside - As noted in the first post, the territories haven't been drawn in yet. I'm kicking around several ideas to include Historical battles and possibly Generals. So don't assume anything's being left out because they're not in the first draft.

Regarding Spain's participation, yes they were involved, to a lesser extent though, and could possibly be left out, but Spain owned a pretty large piece of the South, including Florida.

I'm continuing work on this but, unlike my first map, I don't have the abundance of time to alter it every time someone mentions something.
I'll try to update it as often as possible, but it may only be once a week or every other week.

(edit) I'm planning to place the 13 colonies, possibly add territories to the Indian Nations, and a few of the Western areas (Cumberland, Kentucky, etc.)

I'm also considering naming some of the territories after noted battles, and the flags (which serve as "ports") maybe after the most recognizable Generals (Washington, Cornwallis, etc...)

True, not much has been done yet, but I think the notable thing about this initial draft is that it gives an idea of what I have in mind regarding gameplay, and a preliminary on where I'm heading with the graphics, which was why I started this thread now, so I can get some ideas.

Always good to hear from others in AADOMM... thx for dropping in.

Why all Revolutionar Map must have Part of europe(England, france ,spain)?
Here what i can sugest, create map only with 13 colony, then surounded terittories, you can add British Fleet,France Fleet,REvolutionary Army units,British Unit,France unit(and others unit nations),also you can add all relevant Vilages and Towns(battle field ground).
For mine opinion, these is main theatre of these revolution, and for that you dont need to put Part of Europe on map, because in that way will be unique map.

That could be a fine idea. It includes the involvement of other nations but it keeps the focus on North America

Elijah,
I think you have a great start here. I know it is only a rough draft and you are just presenting it to get opinions and insight from other cartographers here. I think your perspective to add Britain, Spain and France is right on, even if you choose to change it. It was fought on American soil but nontheless, we were invaded. If anyone really wants to say this is a copy, I have saved all work you have done on this map up to now and will gladly post each segment here for you, showing that this is entirely your work. There are so many different directions you can go with this map and I have no doubt, you will keep it as factual as possible. I know this was a tough map to take on and you value everyone's opinions and try to make everyone happy. I am not sure why this map hasn't worked out before when others have presented it, but I do hope you stick with it and make it one of the best. Good luck...and don't forget "The shot heard around the world" :)

Very good idea Qwert. If you include the European continent, it seems too much maps we seen before. Keep it localised, and if my history is correct, throw in some teasacks in boston please....or is that another revolution.

No need to hi-jack, but the US wasn't even created then. You weren't invaded, only the Native Americans were.

Alas, if you are Native America, I am sorry for the assumption. But if you're not, then.. you weren't invaded.

(How about both of you create your 1776 maps, name them different things, and have different mechanics? Then the CC world has greater choice in their American Revolutionary Wars)

I have to say Bry - the fact that the territories on these two are the same - makes it look very fishy...

With the input so far I'm reconsidering whether or not to place the European countries in the map...
I was initially thinking this would be a good classic-style board, but the potential to make it a little more complex is good.

I'll take it back to the drawing board, brush up some on my history and gun for a revision within the next week or so.

Everyone's comments have been appreciated and taken constructively. After all, my goal is to put together a map which will have wide appeal.

And Cairns, I'll do my damndest to put some tea in there somewhere! lol

Thx - Elijah
