Like many others here, I'm not a fan of the new classic. The army circles, as I posted in some game chat or another, look like flying saucers hovering over the world's countries. They're very distracting, as the brightest and most eye-catching element of the map now is also the least relevant to strategy.
And for those who say "shoulda checked out the thread in the foundry", I did check out the thread in the foundry. That's probably my favorite forum on the site, and while I don't post super often, I'm there almost every day. And the classic touch-up thread was rather disappointing: interest in the touch-up seemed lukewarm, quench came after only 10 or so pages, and very much of the process seemed to come by administrative or artistic fiat. There were several "lack doesn't want this" or "the artist decided on this" comments that pretty much killed the thread for me, especially after the boundless horror and head-clutching frustration of the British Isles revamp thread (which is another clusterfuck coming soon to your 'join a game' page). It never felt like anything approaching a community-vetted effort.
More to the point, it would've been surpassingly easy to generate more commentary on the classic touch-up through the use of a banner or something. One of the main concerns with the foundry is attracting traffic, and while I don't think that a site-wide announcement should be made about any old map, this is the signature map of the site we're talking about here. So for people to say "shoulda looked at the foundry", especially if they're people that know perfectly well that 98% of the players on this site never visit the foundry... well that's just damn disingenuous.
