Yeah, but you get the day off. Here they have to celebrate on their own time.

this bank holiday was granted by our government a while back - i dont think it symbolises anything in partiular??

those "sacred pussies" also went back and invaded on D-Day which was the most successful millitary invasion in the history of the world, and besides it was the military commanders who gave the orders, they were the fukin scared pussies.

These Frenchmen who were occupied also went back into the woods and countryside and killed Germans in a vicious hand-to-hand guerrilla war, in which 300.000 frenchmen lost their lives through reprisals or battlefield deaths, and alsoinflicted the highest casualty rates the Gemran army has ever sustained over a six week period when they invaded originally. So whilst the Dunkirk argument is unadulterated ungrateful bollocks, so is "teh french is teh s0rrendorz".

This thread is ridiculous as I don't think europeans would celebrate cinco de mayo. What's next, making a thread asking whether Americans should celebrate the 14 of July? That's just ridiculous.

No it's us celebrating we're free after thanking and paying respect to the canadians and americans and british who freed us. they have lost so many that suggs is right, it was more days than there are in a year....i mean they even lost a war to themselves!

Most countries have managed that feat I think.

Well celebrating it seems a bit silly for anyone with knowledge of history, but shoot people for it?

It was the day when modern states were born. It was one of the biggest days in French revolution - the day when mobs attacked Bastillie, the national prison, freed the political (and other prisons) armed themselves and went on to change the world. In the long and painfull process that was most clearly started here (or in smaller scale rooted in American revolution few years earlier) the medieval society with four classes (peasants, burghers, priests and nobility) ended and the door was opened for societies we live nowadays where everyone counts as equal and you can choose your occupation, your place of living or generally your future as you wish. I think there's only two years everyone should memorise from history. One is the independence year of ones own country and the other is the year of the French revolution.

Though some of the charges they threw at the queen of France were uncalled for.

Which name? The prison? I don't speak French and I usually have trouble writing it as the pronounciation and spelling is so far away from one another.

La Bastille. Never mind that twaddle though, I'm certain that anyone who studied history (even a Finn) can tell you it was an inglorious and ignominious act which irrevocably scarred the continent and put France to sleep.

Oooh, let's talk about names... Homer, Homeros, Louis, Ludvig, Mao Zedong, Mao Tsetung, La Bastille, Bastilji... Why can't names be the same in every language? :)

But yes, the French revolution was a painful process as many things in history are, but France didn't go to sleep due to it. On the contrary. Aren't you French yourself? If it wasn't for French revolution Napoleon never would've had the chance to forge his empire and give his legacy to the whole continent. Which - to some britons here - is not at all awful, but quite good as the French spread the idea of nationalism and Napoleons legistlation was far ahead of most of Europe at the time. And thus the French Revolution quite literally helped my own humble nation to be born.

I think you said the same one twice: Mao Zedong and Mao Tsetung are the same person with different spellings.

Kinda like the endless dozen spellings for Momar Quadaffi(sp?).

That was the whole point in my post. That for some reason - particularly with famous people - the spelling differs depending on the language. It's frustrating sometimes to read history books in other languages when you have to figure out who the hell they are talking about. It's not once when I've wondered curiously who is this Louis XIV that seem to have been such a important king before I've realised that oh! It means Ludvig XIV the Sun King. Oh the same with Homer = Homeros and many many others...

No joke, I was genuinely concerned that a fellow human being might have made an error. As you can see in his reply, I was wrong. Unlike you, I am man enough to admit it when it happens.

And now that you have my attention, I'M the one who is five? Are your personal skills really this poor or are you just an miserable little prick because you're bored and have nothing better to do than go online and be some trolling hypocrite?

I'll tell you what, prove me wrong: apologize and I'll back off. If not, you only prove that you can't eat humble pie to save your life. So, what will it be?
