Heroes map (Updated) - with poll [Abandoned]

Postby Ethitts on Wed Apr 30, 2008 7:16 am

This is a DRAFT, I just want people to comment on the idea of the map, the images (especially the heroes) will change.

Ok, hopefully this updated map will show people what I had in mind. The bonuses and individual territory layout are just temporary so people can get an idea. Players start with 1 hero. I still need to add some impassables, one-way attacks etc.

94 territories
12 continents (1 continent represents an army)
8 heroes with unique abilities
10 army leaders

These are the current heroes:
Good:
Flight: can attack all good army leaders
Lightning: can annihilate random places on the map
Invisibility: only holder of this hero can see the number of armies, everyone else sees ? (I don't know if this can be done or not)
Shield: only armies that can fly can attack this hero (NOT flight hero)

Evil:
Minion control: can attack all evil army leaders
Blast: can annihilate all armies in a line in front of this hero
life drain: drains armies from territories in front of this hero and adds it to his own territory
Deathly Aura: all territories surrounding this hero lose 1 army per turn

My friend had the idea that you could choose which hero you wanted on your first turn, but I don't know how that could be programmed. Well, that's my idea, hopefully I'm not forgetting anything. Obviously more detail would be put into it (trees, rocks etc). I just want to get some feedback.

use the Img button instead of the URL button. if it is too big then put the letters ' Big ' between the ' [ ' & ' Img ' at both ends.

you just have to go back and edit the URL brackets in your original post, not create a new post.

hopefully this is your image

The XML isn't capable of doing what you're proposing, at least when it comes to the cloak ability. The graphics would have to come up a few orders of magnitude to be at a Foundry standard as well.

Thanks for the feedback. That's a shame about the cloak, perhaps someone else has a substitute idea? As for the graphics, I said in my post it was just a draft and if people showed interest then I would make it look decent.

in relation to seeing how many armies that people have,
you could do foggy and the terit that has that capability could have a one way boarder - i think that would work but it would be really crap gameplay, so isnt worth doing.
this map doesnt really appeal - the armies are just bubbles and called the same things,
i think theres also a size issue???
and maybe you could design the map for 6 players instead of 8 to ease the size issue and maybe make it better?

The map is just a draft. Of course names will be changed and territories won't be just blobs of different colours. I just wanted people to get an idea of what I wanted to create. The idea of starting with a hero, each with their own power.

What makes this map different from the rest is the unique powers. Does anyone know what is possible and what isn't? For example, it appears the cloak thing can't happen, but is it possible to do the lightning power and life drain?

I think, if I understand the explanation in the legend, that you can almost, but not quite, do them.

For example, killer neutrals can reset a territory to a certain number of neutrals every turn. And you can have a decay on certain territories. But that must be something that always happens, not just when you have the hero or something.

I thought the lightning ability would be simple enough to do, there are maps out there that have territories being able to annihilate (Feudal War). As for the life drain, I would want it to drain armies only if there was more than 1 army on the territory and then the hero get whatever was drained. If that can't be done than it could just work in the sense that, the territories being drained would get -1/-2/-3/whatever per turn and the hero would gain +1/+2/+3/whatever per turn.

The XML can't do that. Conditional Fog of War isn't do-able either. I would suggest dropping the invisibility entirely in favor of something else. As for the life drain, how about a fixed -1 around the hero, and a fixed +5 on the hero (I would suggest lower, the hero is very imbalanced as it stands).

My first reaction was 'oh no'. However, I think there is potentially some nice gameplay in this idea.

You wanted to know what features you can/can't have:
Ethitts wrote:1. Flight: can attack all good army leaders Yes
2. Lightning: can annihilate random places on the map Yes - well, not random places, but pre-designated ones
3. Invisibility: only holder of this hero can see the number of armies, everyone else sees ? (I don't know if this can be done or not) You're right, this can't be done as you intend
4. Shield: only armies that can fly can attack this hero (NOT flight hero) Yes, this can be done (one-way borders)
5. Minion control: can attack all evil army leaders Yes
6. Blast: can annihilate all armies in a line in front of this hero Yes, but you'd have to decide which line of territories could be attacked
7. life drain: drains armies from territories in front of this hero and adds it to his own territory Sort of; you could have a -1 decay, and a +3 autodeploy
8. Deathly Aura: all territories surrounding this hero lose 1 army per turn Yes

Tacktix suggested having an alternative power to the invisibility; but I can't think of anything at the moment.
