Territories: 46 total. 28 position players, 8 goalies, 4 scored goals, and 6 scored points. There are no continents.

Unique Factors: Objective driven (first player to 5 points wins. goals are 3 points. points are 1 point.). Players cannot attack other team, only bombard. Players cannot attack goalies at all.

I really like the idea of objective driven maps. And I've also been dissatisfied with the sports maps i've seen thus far. Not because they aren't good but because they fail to meet my sporting drive. Well, I believe I may have a great map idea. I am theming it around hurling, which is one of Ireland's national sports. I started a hurling club here in Pittsburgh, PA, USA so it is another passion of mine. But I think this technique has growth potential.

Hurling is play with 15 aside. The image below is my very first, very rough draft map. To understand the positions, each team has 15 players. 1 goalie, 3 backs (2 corners and 1 full), 3 half-backs, 2 mid-fielders, 3 half-forwards, and 3 full forwards.

So it is blue versus gold. Here are the basic proposed rules at first thought:

Players on one team can only bombard players on the other team. Goalies can not be bombarded by opponent.

Every player can only bombard the player right in front of them. They can attack a space on their own team adjacent forward backwards, sideways, or diagonal. Goalies cannot be attacked or bombarded.

Mid-Fielders and forwards can attack the points. Only full forwards can attack the goals.

Goalies get +3 each turn. Goalies can bombard anyone in their defensive zone plus midfielders.

There are 8 total starting positions possible. They are all goalie positions. Yes, for the purposes of adapting the hurling pitch to conquer club we added some extra goalies.

Every position with a player on it gets +1 per turn (overridden for goalie position)

TO DO LIST:
    Make Large Size Map
    Write XML
    Georeference XML

one thing, whoever starts with the goalie is going to have an impossibly big advantage. territories that give bonuses should be neutral or given the same bonus for each starting position.

The attacking system is a very interesting idea and very new, but I'm worried that the focus on bombardment due to armies not being able to move after they have bombarded all the territs around them, could lead to a stagnant map.

good luck with it though you have quite a map developing here and its nice to see a map that isn't the old football/baseball/american football going up.

Yeah, this kept bugging me as I went to sleep last night. My thinking is that basically we stretch reality a touch here to have 4 goaltender starting positions on each side. Either that or the goalie and the fullbacks get the same protection and bonuses. But yes this needs to be corrected.

The attacking system is a very interesting idea and very new, but I'm worried that the focus on bombardment due to armies not being able to move after they have bombarded all the territs around them, could lead to a stagnant map.

I should be clear. Armies can move, just only within their own team. So the blue center half-back can attack either of the blue half-backs, midfielders, or fullbacks because they are all adjacent. He, however, can only bombard the yellow players.

Strategically I see the challenge being able to produce a scoring play from your defensive zone past the bombarding goaltenders, defensemen of the other team. For freestyle this works out simply. Since players can always be eyeing offensive opportunities and defending their goal. Or goals (plural) since players could have positions on both teams. For sequential play I think that we'll have to make at least some of the neutrals killer neutrals so that they don't just all get knocked down to 1s, allowing for easy plays while the other player is waiting their turn and cannot bombard you. Though even then there is no reason player b shouldn't have forted up to prevent that.

Thinking about it, I'm pretty excited (assuming I can make it work) at the prospects of completely different gameplay. I'll update the map to reflect the idea of a shared goaltending responsibility and post it later tonight.

THANKS SO MUCH for the input! I'm as danfrank says, a map making addict.

I obviously have no idea how my own map works. You cannot fort up! killer neutrals it will have to be. It'd be cool if you could fort the goal scoring box itself but if I understand the xml right you cannot fort what you cannot attack, so that wouldn't be possible.

ok folks, we're almost there. Next step will be to import armies and then make a large scale. Kind of weird working backwards but I thought if it works at small scale it will likely work at large scale.

i think the general idea and the map set up. i think that a scoring system like that is a really creative way to do it by giving points like that. I think some form or set up of that kind is a good idea, except for that once someone get up, in multi-player games he'll have a target on his back. it's a really interesting idea though.

I'm glad you touched on that last item. I've given that a lot of thought. What is to keep players from hanging out on the goalie seats and building and then rushing. I'm actually thinking that maybe what I need to do is change the goalie bonus and maybe even eliminate it. I already have it that goalies cannot be attacked though and I fear the reverse which would be the Das SchloB effect where folks get pinned on the chutes. So maybe +3 for the goalie. +1 for each territory. All auto-bonuses.

Also, it looks like you cannot zero the min reinforcements so there will be some reinforcements. Another option would be +3 for the goalie, +1 for position players, and a deploy bonus of +1 for every two positions including goalies. Taking that first territory only makes sense. But it won't necessarily be easy to hold.

In any case, I like the idea that players need to build, while at the same time protect their backs and plan their scoring moves. I want to try this without killer neutrals. If someone opens a lane through a particular midfielder they always run the risk of opening that lane for someone else.

On another note, if you take the instructions literally, the top two goalies cannot attack the bottom cornerback and vice-versa since they aren't adjacent. I hope that is clear enough to folks. I've already got another map applying a similar game mechanism to completely different kind of sport. Another objective map. As I said before, I really like objective maps. Hopefully there is a reasonable base for them here. I think there will be especially once folks have simpler objective based maps at their disposal. All the ones that have been quenched thus far (almost all anyhow) have been complex or the objective has been an after thought.

How do you score on the map?

Also, a points system is somthing I dont think the current XML is capable of but possibly with a bit of nagging...

Good questions. You either do one of the following (in CC terms):

1) Attack a goal scoring space from a full forward position (red circles inside goalposts soon to be labeled as such) for 3 points; or
2) Attack a point scoring space (yellow circles in the uprights soon to be labeled as such) from any offensive position for 1 point.

So basically you need to "score" and hold the score. So you can do 2 points +1 goal, or 2 goals + 1 point or 3 goals. In the xml they'll be written up as alternative objectives. And yes there will be several combinations which I understand is feasible.

I hope that helps.

Re: Hurling Gaelic Sport Map- 5/25 UPDATE w/ map v1.4 and POLL!

Postby seamusk on Sun May 25, 2008 12:34 pm

Newest update includes clarification of the points, bolding of the posts, and re-organization of the points to emphasize 1 pointers which is truer to real life hurling. I also think it will help gameplay. Also included a couple of graphics. I've updated the to do list in the top post here so as to keep things clearer.

So, I made it a short ways into a solo test play this morning. I'm making one change which is to reduce the goalie bonus from +5 to +3. Which I know I had discussed before. But otherwise given the small size of the map goalie's build too fast too strong. Especially with the first two lines being 1 and 3 neutrals.

Re: Hurling Gaelic Sport Map- 5/29 TESTPLAY IN PROGRESS!

Postby seamusk on Thu May 29, 2008 10:36 am

Theprotector85 WINS!

seamusk tries for a 3rd time to stay alive. I'll deploy 4 on blue right corner-back. Attack blue center half-back from orange center half-forward until it is down to 1 or less. Attack Blue left mid-fielder from orange goalie #3. If that isn't enough use goalie #1 until the mid-fielder is down to 1 or less. Then use the right corner-back and a prayer to attack the center blue half-back and the left blue mid-fielder. Then the upright. If I am successful use the left (first) and center orange half-forwards to take two points from the uprights. And if that is somehow successful bombard the orange center full forward from the blue goalie #1 until its down to 1. Attack the center forward from the orange center half-forward. and then the left goal. Then fort 8 from orange right half-back to center half-forward or forward (whoever is foremost). And if all that happens buy a lottery ticket...

seamusk move 9. Score: 5 to 0.

Examples of how you score. These images show what positions can attack each goal (red = 3 pts) and point (yellow = 1 pt) position.

This idea has yet to win me over, but you seem dedicated so keep on working. :) Perhaps my mind will change. Good luck with the map.

Thanks for the post Andy. Is that because its just not your thing? Just curious. No one who has voted that they don't like the map has commented so far as I can tell. This may be for the better because they don't have constructive input. But sometimes constructive input from folks who this map doesn't have immediate appeal to could be helpful to so I want to encourage y'all to post with some input if you can.

Mostly just unfamiliarity. Geographic areas, even ones smalls as cities, carry with them a general sense of familiarity (geography is everywhere, redunant...I know!)

Also, the wall of text is daunting, which, even as detailed and clear as it may be, generally seems to turn off the casual gamer (which this site heavily consists of).

So the only advice I can give...is for you to somehow make it more familiar feeling, thus more appealing. And maybe figure out a way to condense the text wall.
