When did we cross the line?

Postby Gregrios on Wed Jul 30, 2008 10:09 pm

Once upon a time, reality dictated fiction. =D>

Not anymore! #-o

It now seems as though the exact opposite occurs. Now fiction dictates reality!

Of course this is the oldest trick in the book. [-X

Get people familiar with a certain idea either through tv shows or movies and preceed to install the idea into everyday life. It's absolutely brilliant! =D>

How long are we going to allow this kind of laugh behind our back manipulation to continue. :?

....or is it ok with you if our very lifestyle is dictated by the very entertainment from which we've grown so comfortable with?

Yup...and it started with your favorite book of fiction...the christian bible.

Say it enough times, get the kids indoctrinated early and perception is reality.

You have described modern religion perfectly. =D>

"Machines were mice and men were lions, once upon a time.
But now that it's the opposite, it's twice upon a time."

Who can tell me who said that?

Since you've changed the topic to religion you're basiclly saying that you would rather live in complete ignorance to the fact that you're being used as nothing more than a puppet of society.

Man has always been dancing back and forth over the line between reality and fiction. It is just a fact of life.

People used to tell stories of bravery and courage in battle and conquest… which encouraged warriors to aspire to the same greatness. Tales told of warriors who were so great that they took on supernatural qualities, and people truly believed that they could achieve the same.

The relationship between fiction and reality hasn't changed much in history.

If you think someone's changed the subject by referencing religion, then I for one have no darn idea what you were talking about.

Does anyone else?

Yes but the pattern has always been a one way street.

Now with the mass comumications that we poccess, that very pattern has been flip flopped with surprizing speed and ease.

Before television there was nothing that could send a message or an idea to the masses as quickly and effectly as it does today. ;)

And if you do could you give us mere mortals a clue?

I mean, I'm happy to debate with you - but if I have to guess what the effin debate is about, I think you've probably lost before we start.

That's not fiction you're talking about. It's true stories that people are aspiring to. Some of it might be fiction but it's based on the truth. So it's not the same as what I'm referring to. 8-)

Tales of men who were so great in battle that they could fly above the earth and kill sixty men with a single sweep of their sword, and who gained this prowess by slaying three billion enemies in a single week? Purely fiction. But it defined what people believed. Maybe not quite as imaginative as some of today's stuff, but it's the same thing.

So what you're basically saying is that EVERY MYTHOLOGICAL AND RELIGIOUS WRITING is at least based on truth and fact?

Do you know what happens to the guy who catches a 20 pound fish? It just keeps getting bigger and bigger in the stories until the guys reeled in a 25' great white. Now what do you think happens with a warrior who kills 20 men in a single battle? The point is that the stories get blown so far out of proportion that they can not count as reality anymore. So the kid who decides to become like this hero is dictating his life around a fictional story. It's a two way street.

Actually that's reality dictating fiction because it started as reality and ended up as fiction. You're just looking at this in a different perspective but rest assure, you ARE saying the same thing as me. This isn't fiction dictating reality because it started off as reality. ;)

but strikewolf was talking about an actual hero that became legend over time. I was referring to something else--legends that arose out of the storyteller's minds.
