I went dressed all in black. Turtle neck, slacks, socks, dress shoes, and a healthy dose of make up. Lots of nervous laughter, scared the heck out of the guys, until they realized that the girls were constantly taking me off into another room to touch up my make up. Then they wished they'd thought of it. ;)

i dont think he wants girls to touch up his make up i think he just wants girls to touch something else

Or better yet, The Scarlet Pimpernel. He was a masked hero, who was quite FANCY, if you catch my drift.

Depends on your bod.
If it's good, aspecially if you have good legs/bot, then go as a (male!) ballet dancer.
If not, something amusing. The Telltubby idea wasnt bad, but too specific. Something cute and cuddly.

Go as a parcel

Go and buy loads of brown wrapping paper, cheap value stamps, this way up stickers and string. Then wrap yourself up (you'll need some help in making it look good) in the paper and string and stick on the stamps.

An original and obviously home made costume will get you more attention from the ladies, and you have something that is an instant talking point to help break the ice as you talk about how long it took you to get wrapped etc.

It also has the added advantage that you won't loose your deposit from the fancy dress shop if you damage the costume (I once wore a ronald mcdonald costume with huge foam boots. It didn't realize someone was standing on the end of my boot and went to walk and ripped the boot in half. I lost my 50 quid deposit :( )

haha sorry to laugh ped but the image of you as the most forlorn looking clown in the world, shuffling home with your massive clown shoe all torn and floppy, is too good. Was it raining?

I knew a guy at uni who had a real lightsabre from lucasfilm props dept. He was a dick, not least because he owned a real lightsabre and I didn't. He used to go to parties as luke skywalker with this thing hanging off a special belt, but since when did luke wear jeans and a t-shirt? Anwyay we would hold the lightsabre though and will it, will it to work but it never did.

So if youhave a lightsabre you could do that. or you could wear blakc clothes and a black hoodie and go as luke when he gets to jabba's palace in jedi, the first time in the movies when he looks really hot. That would; get chicks, as would pretending to do mind control on them, which if you acted like you were serious might even work for real.

I have had good luck with going "non-traditional" (being on a limited budget helped my creative processes ;) ). I would pick some "well-known" often local character and make myself up like them. Someone with a distinctive "look", etc. Be careful about bosses, etc ... you don't want to be seen as mocking.

The other option is to spend lots of money and get the perfect costume of the most popular figures. BUT, chances are others will have the same idea .... and, unless yours is absolutely the best ... you will fall a few notches.

P.S. The parcel idea sounds fun. Suggestion ... go to an appliance store (maybe even Walmart) and ask for a box or two. You can cut them down as small and narrow as you like, but it will help to use them as your "frame". (also, remember to have a joint in the middle ... for dancing, and the old "escape route" for ...)

also cool, although it's not really fancy dress, is to get a bunch of glow sticks, break them and flick the contents all over a black sweater and black jeans. Then turn the lights off.

What was really sad was the sellotape patch up that i though would be okay with the shop. Wankers, charging me 50 notes for a poxy foam shoe.
