I would like to discuss RISK

Postby InkL0sed on Wed Aug 20, 2008 9:05 pm

We could have pages of debates about important things like dice and points and stuff. It'll be fun.

I don't understand the relationship between RISK, and points. Are there RISK leagues that keep a tally of points?

I'm moving this on over to Chatter Box for ya since RISK isn't really related to ConquerClub :)

Sorry

I might actually play my first game tonight...surprisingly I've never played a real game of RISK but a few of us might be playing when I get off of work in 7 minutes :D I'm really excited to finally see the differences between CC and RISK first hand.

Haha, I played once in my life, and needed to play more. That's how I found CC.

I should buy a RISK set.

There is a relationship between RISK and CC.

I am here because I've been a risk fan for about 35 years.

I own a copy, have previously owned several other copies which the vagaries of a rather random life took away from me, have sold a large number of copies when I owned a game shop, and discovered CC through looking for the RiskTOC.

That's not to say that CC is the same as RISK any more than say Yuhgio is the same as Magic or Daredevil the same as Btman.

Hey, did anyone see Colbert refer to RISK on his show?

It would have been in one of last week's shows.

You can all see them on www.hulu.com

But it was used in a funny bit. If I can find a link to a clip, not the entire episode, I'll post it up.

Let's face it; CC is just Risk adapted for the internet. The only differences are the absolute minimum needed to avoid getting sued by Parker Brothers for copyright infringement.

One difference I've seen is that in Risk you have to advance an army into the conquered territory for every die you rolled. So for example if you have a lot of armies in Afghanistan and you're trying to take out Green, who has Oceania, but also has Ukraine, when you roll 3 dice to take Ukraine, you have to leave 3 armies behind there when you turn the other direction and take India.

Heh. We have similar Risk/CC histories. I first heard of Risk in college (1976-80), and the guys in my dorm and I used to play it a lot. Years later, I got a Sega Genesis for the family and one of the game cartridges we bought was Risk. Playing against the computer-generated opponents got too predictable and easy, and against my kids, well, how do you challenge yourself against someone who is asking you what to do?

So a couple of years ago, when we finally got a computer, I did a search for "play Risk online" and found CC.

It's from the Threat Down segment, and he mentions RISK within the first 30 seconds of the clip. The whole bit is funny though.

Good insight into the conflict between Russia and Georgia from the boardgame...

Yeah, and also in RISK whenever you take a one of the "drinking" countries, you have to do that many shots of however many dice you rolled. It can make the games kind of crazy.

And by crazy, I mean freakin awesome.

What do you consider the "drinking" countries? are we just talking excessive drinkers, or anywhere it's not banned?

A "drinking country" on a Risk board is any territory that starts with a letter between (and including) A and Z.

You got it!

Just wait until you play the advanced rules. Extra shots for complaining about dice, taking Kamchatka, moving an army, etc etc.

It sure does get interesting when you attack from West Australia to Great Britain and no one realizes it or complains!

That other guy is wrong. According to the official rules of RISK: The Drinking Game that I made up back in college, the following territories correspond to the following necessary shot, per number of dice rolled:

Great Britain: Gin
Northern Europe: Scotch
Eastern USA: Whiskey
Eastern Australia: Shiraz
Japan: Sake
Yakutsk, Siberia, or Ural: Vodka
Argentina: Tequila
Congo: Rum

Now, I know full well, Tequila would go better on Cent. America, and Scotch of course doesn't really belong on N. Europe. Nor really Rum in the Congo.

But as we played this game, it became apparent that the terts that were shot taking terts had to be those that were either possible to avoid, or wouldn't change hands very often. But still proved necessary to holding the continent, etc. So, you could, technically speaking, avoid taking that tert.
