Forum re-org coming to Callouts!

Postby Twill on Tue Sep 02, 2008 12:15 pm

That's right, it's about time that we did something to reorganize this forum and get it cleaned up!

So, here's what's going to be happening over the next week or two:

1) we're going to add 2 new sub-forums - 1 for clan recruitment and 1 for inter-clan challenges. There will be specific rules for bumping and clan recruitment posts to make it easier for potential members to find you. All non-clan callouts will stay in the main callouts forum and ALL clan callout posts will move to the 2 sub-forums.
2) MarVal is going to take over the moderation of the new public clan sub-forums and start to build a team that can handle some exciting future plans. MarV currently mods the international forums and is part of De Veroveraars der Lage Landen.
3) I'm going to try to give you a glimpse into some of the future features we're wanting to add specifically for clans.

There's going to be a lot of moving and dust while we do this, and once it starts it could take a couple of days so please bear with us while we do :)

If you want to make life easier for us, get your clan leader to tag recruitment threads with [recruitment] and challenge threads with [challenge]. Those will be the first threads moved so they will get a few extra eyes for a few days :)

<goes to put a hard hat on>
See you on the other side!

sounds ok... i think ...

I hope this is not going to be over-moderated though chaps. We need room for some entertaining and sometimes a little warm, inter-clan trash-talk!

Thanks to everyone who has been tagging their threads.

They have to go into one forum or another though, unless you make special arrangements for MarVal to split the thread for you.

That means you can tag with either [recruitment] or [challenge] but not both

You can link from your recruitment thread to a challenge thread if you want, but, as you'll hopefully see, the recruitment forum is primarily for non-clan members to find a new clan, not for clans to find each other or to issue challenges...with the hope that more people will join clans and they can really start to take hold.

It sounds to me like MarV is ready to do some moving, so I'm going to get stuff set up today and he'll do some moving around tonight.

heh, i hazard a guess that this is directed at me mate ;)

It really is both though, as you can see, so i thought initially that it would need to be split!
However, I think it will be mainly used for 'Challenges' so perhaps just a tailored duplicate of the first introductory post could go to be the base of the Recruitment thread.

anyway.. no need for Marv to split it, it can just go in totality to Challenges... and i will make the Recruitment thread myself.

Edit: i think it will need to be split.. but with the front page in both Recruitment & Challenge.

well it never really bothered me RT ... hehe what did the refuge obscure from your searching eyes?

Anyway i am warming to the idea and am sure it will be an improvement.
....I am past my initial 'damn they will balls-up our lovely thread' fears.

I just hope that room for inter-clan fun and back-chat will be able to survive, without over-sensitive scrutiny!?

Here is a suggestion: there are - in addition to ad hoc callouts that will presumably stay in main callout forum - a number of specific callout rooms, such as the officer's mess and the sergeant's hall. They are really good resources for players who might not be in or want to commit to a clan and/or don't have any clan activity going on ATM. I would suggest that you sticky those threads at the top of the forum or something like that...

And one other point... for people who are making non-competitive clans, like for special interest stuff, the kind of thing people might not think to go looking for in a sub-forum but might want to join if they saw it trickle up to the "most recent post" on the main forum index... those type of things might not be a good fit for the "recruiting" sub-forum.

Otherwise I think this is a great the idea.

i agree with this, its hard for non-compeditive/special interest clans to gain members because most on CC assume 'callouts are for finding games!' as i used to... so it would be nice if something was able to be done with these but... i dont know what at the moment :lol:

A clean up and new clarifications for the main Callouts forum will also take place (even if it's something I head up instead of MarVal). That idea may be taken into consideration.

Perhaps some new forum descriptions may be in order. Start proposing.

We talked about a lot more separation of forums, but that's going to come down the line once we see how this shakes out, what the problems with it are, what we need etc.

Things will become a bit clearer once you guys see the "long term plan" :)

A few more clarification posts to go in and some moving to do before the long term plan gets posted though :)

I've increased the number of threads per page to make it easier for MarV to move threads around.

this might slow things down whilst loading this forum temporarily.

I had only thought of the one other category of non-competitive / social callouts... here's sort of what I sort of came up with just probably over thinking a bit on the bigger picture:
Code: Select all
TOP: Callouts
          |
          +---> Clan Recruiting (Competitive)
          |
          +---> Clan Wars
          |
           -----> Social User groups (Recruiting / News / Organizational)
          |
          +-----> Games
                    |
                    +-----> Real Time
                    |
                    +-----> Teammates wanted

I guess there is a question with stuff like Society of Cooks, that is for training and fighting, but not really doing clan wars. In the "games" area is where I think the officers mess and such would go as stickies.

Maybe you guys have this already worked out in detail... but you seemed to ask for my 2c. :mrgreen:

gdang,

We actually originally talked about something similar to that.

there are a couple of problems with structures like the one you proposed:
1) you have sub forums in sub forums which messes with the "new posts" icon (i.e. it doesn't work, thus further hiding non-competitive clans and game callouts)
2) the more forums you have, the less activity each one gets. With things like callouts, once they drop below a certain critical mass of posts, they become un-used
3) people don't like too much change too fast, you have all proven that many times :) by adding these forums now, it's pretty easy to break down farther in the future as is needed. If we overhaul things so fast, people tend to post things in the wrong places at the wrong times or not at all. Going slower helps us get it right (fewer mistakes to make at once) and helps users get used to is and vote with their posting habits for what is needed next.

I am 100% certain that ultimately this will look something like what you have proposed, but not yet :)

Yes, sub forum within a subforum is bad, the map foundry was confusing as it was, now its got sub forums within subforums and it just gets too confusing and i dont dare go in some of them because i'll just get lost!

Keep it on track guys, as much as we all love trapping tom in the dark corners of the foundry ( :? ), lets try to keep it more on the topic of how clans can gang up on tom more efficiently :)
