comapred to most of the developed world, Republican views on religion, welfare, and tons of other things are far more conservative.

Also, smera campaigns are run by everyone, however accordign to my somewhat limited interactions with people form the south, liberal is used to mean something along the lines of hippies, or somethign to that extent free everything and a cradle to grave welfare state. Problem is that its causing people to scurry to the conservative end for fear of being labeled liberal. Thats the impresion i get form people from the south that i talk to (and upstate new york, they're jsut as bad as some southerners, no offense, except to jay_a2j, i mean it in as offensive a way as possible...)

see, i believe in God, but im willing to accept that many don't and that's their views, and they have a right to those views

here's what i think...not that it really matters, but hey, it makes me feel special...everyone should be able to believe in the religion that fits their lifestyle...and if god is truly loving and understanding, he or she will understand that they are worshipping the way they are most comfortable with, or not worshipping (in the case of atheists)...

That's my view. I don't like how Jay and moreso, Caleb always seem to be putting people down for not being Christian. I really believe that God accepts all good people into his graces. I mean are we supposed to blame the Chinese of the early A.D.s for not believing in Christ when they didn't even know anything about him? But anyways that's just my opinion.

I have not experienced what you are talking about in Georgia but I have been to rural Alabama and someone said something along those lines. Really, the south in general is not as bad as it seems it's just that people have a tendency to notice what they are not used to more than that which they are used to for pretty obvious reasons. I believe that being from a part of the country that isn't necessarily like the south that that part is really what stuck out in your mind.

it's also how my history teacher puts it. "there's nothing really wrong with it, that's just the only thing they know."

Umm, how does this square with your profile?

Occupation: School...military...mostly school

There's no bigger organization of institutional groupthink than the military. Not to say we aren't a diverse bunch, but still...

Heck, who am I to judge? I certainly didn't mean any offense. Besides, the military can use all the intelligent, independent thinkers it can get. Convincing them to stay past their ETS, however, is a different matter.
