Having a racist/nationalist teacher

Postby Ntetos on Thu Sep 18, 2008 12:25 pm

So it turns out that my new English teacher is ultra-nationalist. She is apparently one of those who believe conspirasies like how Greek have not become the offical language of the world etc. She also believes about Greeks being like the master race or something, Greeks are the smartest and best in everything and that we should conquer our enemies. When I said something about an idiot in TV who says that Greeks came from the space and are destined to rule the world she said that he is right and if I search in the internet I would realise that all these bullshit are true. What should I do with her? Try to ignore her or even agree with her so that she doesn't put me a low grade or constantly argue with her? What's the opinion of all you lesser human beings?

She's an English teacher that believes there is a conspiracy against Greek becoming the official world language? Sounds like she is part of her own conspiracy theory.

I think if I were in your situation I'd just ignore her ramblings and/or suggest she get back to teaching English.

Subversive agreement is the way to go. Especially in countries that don't understand irony properly.

Does your headmaster/principal agree with this nutjob? Or know that these opinions are being put forward in the classroom?
In these days of internet cafes and computers in the library it is quite easy to send an anonymous email detailing how you, a cocerned outsider, have "heard a rumour" from some of the pupils that this teacher has that opinion.

You could also copy the email to your local newspaper.

For Chrissake people, she's proud to be Greek. Get over it. Greeks are not so much proud of their country as they are proud of their heritage and who they are. It's something that all the loser nationalities that want to kill all their people over a freaking sand pile in the middle of freakin' nowhere aught to take note of.

You could
A) Be super pro Italian since the Greeks are so amazing and smart yet the Romans managed to conquer them so according to her own beliefs which you now believe and understand the Italians must be super-super aliens.....
B) Fight with her, then go to the Principal/Deans office... If she gives you a bad grade and you can prove that you did a good job, then it's an automatic A because she is holding a grudge (worked for me!).
C) Talk to the Principal/Dean yourself or have your parents do it. My advice is to take a friend or two. That way in the back of your Dean/Principle's head they will be worried about multiple sets of parents.
D) "Roger her senseless"
E) Get over it because she is just a Scientologist who is proud of her nationality

I like a cobo of A,D, and E best. In that order!

I don't really get how you can be proud to be a certain nationality. Personally it makes no sense. I mean by be proud of something that you had no influence on?

I don't know your teacher, or grade level, but the bottom line is you need the grade. Part of school is learning to "play the game". Your best bet is probably to go along with her unless and until she asks you do something truly against your morals ... if she thinks you should throw bombs, or even rotten apples at foreign embassies ... NO, of course not! BUT if she just wants you to agree that Greek is the best langauge and that everything Greek is good ... just listen, don't object and agree when you can. (and DO tell her what she wants to hear on the tests!!!). You can disagree when you are not in her class.

As for Jonas internet suggestion .. be VERY VERY careful. Email is quite trackable unless you really know what you are doing. Besides, it does not sound like she is really doing anything against the laws of your country.

On the bright side, the real truth is that Greece has a great culture and truly has contributed a lot to the world. So, there is a lot to be proud about. Concentrate on those things ... that you know there are other nice countries out there can be your "secret" until you get out of her class. ;)

Good luck!

I disagree with this on so many levels it's not funny. Suggesting to "just go along" with the teacher to ensure a "grade". For some, things like character, integrity and conviction will come before a grade. Speaking from personal experience, I once had a professor in college who, to be blunt, was a die hard liberal. (go figure) But when he brought up politics I stood my ground. And at the end of the semester he was going to give me a D-, so I dropped his class just before the final. I suspected he had a bias against me because of my vocal political views but I was not about to "keep to myself" and let him indoctrinate the class with liberalism. It was Sociology 101, and why he was bringing up politics was beyond me.

Absolutely - that's why I didn't suggest doing it from a computer at home.

BTW, there's nothing wrong with thinking that Greece is a fine country with a proud history and a beautiful language - I think so myself (though it's so long since I used Greek I dooubt I could even read it now). But it seemed to me that you were desrcibing a far more fanatical attitude.

YOu know what my favourite memory of Greece is? The hugely appetizing smell thaqt is all-pervasive, of fresh garlic frying in decent Olive Oil.

And White Power Bill is proud to bw white, for chrissakes. Also I agree with fircoal. Birth location is an accident. if your parents had to hack through miles of jungle and swim shark-infested seas to make sure you were born wherever you were born, be proud of them. But not the rock you live on.

Congratulations to Comic Boy for pointing out the (hitherto unacknowledged) elephant in the living room.

Seriously though, I suspect that the internet probably agrees with you, and that your explanation is the most plausible.

I mean I can't imagine that a well educated sociology lecturer would be particularly impressed by a finals paper that consisted of:
1. a list of URLs to poorly produced youtube videos
2. repetition of the mantra "If you don't agree then you will go to hell! Just wait till you're dead! Then you'll be sorry!"
3. pictures of fictional coins
4. short haikus about the enormity of Ron Paul's penis
5. scribbled drawings of Lizard-Men
6. threats that failing to take the essay seriously would have the assesor thrown into a 'FEMALE' concentration camp
7. grainy pictures of plane-wreckage with captions saying "You can clearly see there is no plane wreckage in this picture"
8. spurious misrepresentations of the premises of widely accepted scientific doctrines
9. constant blaming of all the world's problems on a shadowy cartel of mystery men

But yeah... who are we to judge? Maybe Jay failing sociology was all a big conspiracy. We'd better go stock up on tinfoil again.

Well then, meet Kintaro... my own elephant,

Why should a Sociology teacher care what Jay's views are? Matter-of-factly, how would that even come up.... unless the teacher started the open ended argument?
I do not think that Jay is not without a point, being as it was a Sociology class.

I don't see how Jay or anyone save maybe Alex Jones could possably -repeatedly- intwine NWO into common college level sociology.

My brief experience with sociology classes was that political argument/debate was something that the subject inevitably kicked up every couple of minutes. I'm mystified as to why people seem to think that it was unreasonable for it to do so...[/quote]
