the ebola mountains (#1) fit the style of the map much better than #2 simply because there's a lot of bevel going on in the rest of the map.
if it had been a flat style map then no doubt #2 would have been the right choice with a few modifications. make several types of mountains (not just 1 as you have now) and then use variation in size. this way more realistic and eye pleasing results are produced.

anyway on other aspects of the map, i don't like the white borders. not even a bit.
i think you need to redo all the borders to make them smoother and absolutely make them a uniform colour. you don't need different border colours to separate the continents because the continents already have distinctive colours. and if you really insist on having different borders then simply make thin black/grey borders for inside terits and thick black/grey borders for betwen the continents.

i also don't like the bevel used on the legend text and on the neighboring countries text. reduce it and it would be much better

Mountains are the bane of many mapmakers!

While I really like your 'stamped' mountains, the contoured ones fit the bevelled map better, hence the reason I've voted for #1.

#3's mountains are by far the best, however dont fit the theme of the map.

now that most of the bevel is gone the flat mountains fit better on the map.
if you also add different shapes to the mountain range i'll change my vote.
because right now you have the same mountain copy pasted all over and made smaller or larger.
do some other shapes, perhaps one with 2 peaks 1 that resembles a hill, etc.

I'm partial to this older version myself. I liked the white borders, not the gray. I like the deep red background better. But I like the new title better. I'm still not totally satisfied with either of the mountain ranges.

The background looks too muddy and washed out.

What's with the dots at the bottom of each mountain?

River and flatness are fine.

Frankly graphically this hurts my eyes and particularly the rivers that disappear and reappear, kind of anti-geographical feeling. As I told you long ago, you should not try to please everyone putting a bit of each request in your map you end up with a sluggish graphic compromise like your muddy background. Go for red, go for grey but do it bright.

I have an idea - not meaning to rude. but why don't you start over from scratch? With what you've learned in the process of making this map, you could probably create an even better base version that what you have now, and maybe in the process, satisfy some of the foundry?

I only suggest because we seem to be going in circles... or even in the wrong direction. You have spent so much time trying to adjust this map, but I haven't seen anything in months that is pushing you towards a quench.

I think RJ's suggestion is a good one. The map has merit, but has got to a stagnant period... A complete redraw will at least bring a fresh look - you may even find a new style that speaks cuckoo clocks and flugelhorns... ;-)

any thoughts on the gameplay situation? I know you've got your stamp but I stand by my previous comments. I can't promise I won't say anything about it again but I'm not trying to harp on this issue.

a couple of things come to mind

1. Switzerland is a neutral country so no continents. the association I've made is a stretch but it's an idea at least.

2. go old/historical. if present day doesn't present you (I'm just being mean to the non-english native speakers there) with a good option for gameplay, then go back in time.

I looked quickly at the wikipedia page and found a map from 1798. I didn't translate to find out what the 'eck it is but I'm sure that won't be too hard. Find out what it is and do a bit of research. possibly use some of the excess space which your map has to explain a bit of history. here's the map (linked because it's quite large and basically useless unless downsized)

maybe split up the lower left continent to give four continents. you might want to do it with the northern area too. whatever works. if your map is smaller in terms of territories, maybe 4 continents is enough

note the white lines which split up those larger areas which will make your territories. of course you'll have to split up some of the larger ones but that's fairly easy to do.

That sure is change in direction - looks like it should be hanging in an art gallery. I like it, but not so sure if it would work for a game map. It might just be personal taste - I prefer clean edges & simplicity. Ed offered some great suggestions. I do really like the pain daub background feel. Try to keep that if you can.

I have no idea how your city and town idea would work or what'd make it work.
