The Sandwich Islands (aka Hawaii) - (Shelved)

Postby lomonster on Thu Nov 06, 2008 3:23 am

Alright, so as much as I want to do this map. Time is not allowing. #-o Until I have more time I'm closing the thread, however, I reserve the right to reopen at any time =D>

The Sandwich Islands was the name given to Hawaii by Captain Cook on his discovery of the islands on January 18, 1778. The islands are full of diverse geography including volcanoes, lava flows, snow covered mountains, rivers, valleys, etc. This early time period would be key to my idea of a playable map because it could include Captain Cook's fleet. I'd have to do more research but I believe Hawaiian Kings of this period had fabulous fish ponds which could easily be worked in as a resource for bonuses (small point, but thought I'd throw it in).

The 8 major islands are:

Kaua'i
Ni'ihau
O'ahu
Moloka'i
Lana'i
Kaho'olawe
Maui
Hawai'i

I can research better images and artwork if the interest is there.

I like the idea a lot.

Very liniar and large amounts of wasted space though-you might have trouble with gameplay.

Excellent point on the linear issue, I'll have to hammer that out. At the very least we could have East and West routes. However, that'd still leave the center islands compressed and the end islands very remote. One solution might be to use Captain Cook's fleet as a point to travel between the islands. We could also create outrigger canoe fleets for the different kings. I'm going to start researching this time period in Hawaii but I'm pretty sure the islands were not under one King yet. Maybe after this process I'll understand windward and leeward better too.

One other note. Because of the shape and size of some of the larger islands we could easily create multiple territories on each island.

a map of the islands would be fun to create visually - somebody made one a while back that looked like it was lifted from a hawaiian shirt - but if you look at all of the times that Japan has been started and failed you'll get a sense of how hard it is to make a linear map.

Thanks RjBeals. I was toying with those same districts for the Big Island. I'm making a hand sketch of what I think that island should look like. By putting in the volcanoes it creates impassible objects which creates strategic positions in the map. The issue I'm still working on is the linear thing, but I think I'm getting past that. Captain Cook's fleet will make for a bridge point between the four largest islands. Between each island there will be at least 2 routes. I'm toying with the idea of an outrigger canoe on the major routes. Like the Nobo Gold Mines in Egypt Nubia or the Classis ships in Imperium Romanum holding a certain number of outriggers would give you a bonus. I'll link the sketch in the next week or two so that discussion can take place on playability.

Linear is difficult, but not impossible. I like the idea of throwing in ships and canoes (ie English and Spanish in Caribbean), they would make for a great way to get around, or maybe look at trying to bring in as many islands as possible, also to help take up some of the blank space. Im working on what was a very liner map to start with, but hope i may have cracked it now, i like this idea, persevere.
