To add to this, Twill, I truly believe that mpjh is completely correct here, but that this is also common sense.

To act on behalf of the clan you are in, in a position of power, could be argued to be as bad, if not a more severe abuse of power than someone having the power to sneak into a forum and debate with civility.

It creates an us vs. them mentality, creating, as you've called it, a toxic atmosphere. If we knew the powers-that-be didn't play favorites, and were shown that by witnessing them recuse themselves from decisions where a conflict of interest would be easy to identify, it'd go a long way towards resolving that toxic atmosphere.

Dump the us vs. them mentality, and an awful lot of problems work themselves out. Keep up the us vs. them mentality, and everything becomes a fight. Even something as ridiculous as this latest massive drama.

I can provide you with examples of this same bullshit being carried out, in sub-forums that didn't include a large contingent of people close to you, and their punishment NEVER EVEN HAPPENING.

That has to be why The Gang of Forum were surprised by such a severe punishment, because when this wasn't done to people close to the admins, there was NO RECOURSE for the aggrieved and zero consequences for the perpetrators.

Plus, that us vs. them mentality is not a Christian attitude. While it may exist in many churches and Christian cultures, it is not Christlike.

Remember Twill, if Jesus were walking among us today, we'd all crucify him again. And it'd be Christians doing it. Please don't get upset, those last two sentences are theologically sound, and directly taken from the scripture. (also, DO NOT interpret this as drawing a comparison between The Gang of Forum and Jesus Christ's crucifixion. IT IS NOT. What it is, however, is drawing a comparison between the us vs. them mentality of the pharisees, and how that's an integral part of human nature that Christ calls us to resist, and how in the modern times, we still struggle with those same sins: pride, and the ugliest of all, vanity.)

Granted, you're in the unfortunate position of having to enforce the rules, but while that duty places pressures upon you I would never want, it also requires great judiciousness.

Something else I've been thinking about, in light of the recent controversy is something that happened a long time ago. There was a "class clown" that was popular in my 6th grade class. He always had some witty comment to make, was always making the teacher look foolish, etc. It created a deep division in the classroom, a severe us vs. them mentality, and it became very difficult to sit on the fence. That is, until the teacher placed that kid (let's call him Dancing Mustard for the purposes of this story) in charge of the class gerbil (let's call him Starship Enterprise, for the purposes of this story). All of a sudden, Dancing Mustard straightened up. That us vs. them mentality in the classroom evaporated rather quickly. DM was in charge of keeping that cage clean, getting Starship Enterprise back to his cage at the end of the day, assigning who would care for Starship Enterprise during school vacations.

He wasn't in charge of the classroom, just a small part of it.

The troublemakers often make great leaders, and almost always stop making trouble when given some responsibility. That's been my experience. I bet if you gave DM an opportunity to manage a small part of the forum, you'd see an awful lot of these problems disappear. In fact, I'd be willing to stake my account here on it.

So think on that for a little while. I have no idea if DM would even want or accept a minor position at the moderators' table, but from your perspective consider it a purely Machiavellian move. Even Jesus kept the enemy among his disciples closest...

There are other historical examples too. Churchill, perhaps one of the greatest war time leaders of any country in history, purposefully placed deep political enemies in his cabinet. Abraham Lincoln, the greatest war time leader in the history of the United States, did the same thing. It serves a Machiavellian purpose, true, but if your enemies can cause you so much trouble, think about how much better off you'd be if they were on your team, and thus less able to cause damage while simultaneously being able to use their influence to help your ultimate goal: the expansion and perpetuity of Conquer Club.

Sadly, you're the only one with the ability to extend that olive branch, and restore balance to "the Force". You have to be the big man here. It's not easy, and I don't envy the position you are in, but the rewards will be many, whether in this life or the next.

I will add that haivng a neutral party officiate is always a good idea. It is not just that conflict might occur, it is to avoid the appearance of possible conflict.

PS. Maybe its time for a specific pranksters and jokesters forum?

I agree the contract extends only to paying members, and I stated that a long time ago.

I agree that the language is confusing. I suggest that is a sufficient reason to undo the most recent disciplinary actions.

I suggest that you use language like "members may not use another member's account for any purpose except babysitting the account, and may take a game turn or make entries in forums only after identifying themselves as a babysitter" if you want clarification.

I also suggest that you need to address the conflict of interest problem. I suggest a rule that prohibits an admin or mod from taking disciplinary action against any member when the admin or mod is a member of a clan involved or is a friend of the accused or accuser.
Especially as no cheating and abuse case was raised for any of the Gang of Forum. The first anyone outside of the private forums knew about this was a thread in NYB.

I'm not sure why you're arguing - the offenders knew what they did was wrong - it was obvious it was wrong...

If it was right for them to do it - then they would be able to access the areas they did with their OWN accounts?!

That's not the issue, at least not with me. It's that the judiciousness of the powers-that-be is undermined by their overreaction and uneven enforcement of rules. Out of respect to those I could accuse (although I do not respect them), I will not use any names, but I can provide examples of people doing the exact same thing The Gang of Forum were punished for, but that did not result in any kind of punishment WHATSOEVER.

In those cases, the aggrieved were basically told, "deal with it, it's not our problem". However, when the aggrieved are close to the powers-that-be, all of a sudden it is a major offense.

That's just sad. And contemptibly pathetic.

Why should the anger and outrage of the Fireside Tavern be more important than the anger and outrage of any other clan?

Twill,

I am rather new to the Not Yet Banned forums, and actually the forums outside of my usergroups and the Tournaments forum. I've just never had the time to waste reading so much random crap that I don't bother with it. But clearly this, with such impacts on my clan and clanmates, caught my attention and I came out here to see what the community thought and to make my opinion known publicly.

First of all, I am disappointed in the moderation crew of the Fireside Tavern. It has been handled in an elitist manner since the beginning. The moderators judged, harshly, all that apply, and then allowed only those who met their standards in. It doesn't take a genius to look at the member list and see that there are far more conservatives than liberals allowed in, not to mention the comparative numbers of Christians to Atheists. In the end, to top it all off, they reacted childishly and immaturely when it was proven they were deceived, not only removing all Atheists from their forum (and I say their forum, because despite the fact it was supposed to be a collaboration, there was never an Atheist offered an administration or moderation position), as well as privately complaining about cheating. I find it frustrating and disgraceful that they would not have the courtesy to confront those in question about their actions.

Secondly, Twill, I have been most disappointed about your actions regarding this whole process. As mjph pointed out, it is absolutely unacceptable for you to pass judgement on a situation in which you have vested interests. It is painfully obvious that you cannot be an unbiased judge in a situation in which the claim has been made by a member of a clan that you are in. Furthermore, your posts throughout the forum are immature and condescending given any issue in which you are criticized. The quote above is a perfect example of this. There are many other examples of this, I just simply don't have the time, energy, or care enough to find them. But for all of your talk of this being a business, you are constantly acting immature and insulting your "customers."

As an administrator of this site, we expect you to act professionally when acting as an administrator.

Yes. The forum that DM and Snorri were "busted" for getting into was Fireside Tavern.

Well I'm saddened that you are disappointed in me as one of the initial leaders of the Tavern. I think you should know thought that some great things so far have been going on there. Despite frequent complaints that we somehow stifled the conversation we have had 85 topics and 2500(?) posts over the first 8 weeks of our existence. The topics ranging from political (Lots on the US elections with people posting in favor of both candidates), to religion (Zen, Bhuddhism, & Christianity), & economics (wasn't really my area so I wasn't following all of that). In the time that I was a leader I (as the only Christian leader of the three) argued specifically for the admittance of SKittles! and Simon Viavant. I also never banned anyone. In fact the only GH member we have now I specifically called for him to be reinstated and was seconded by another JFC member. He's back, contributing to the forum, and as great a guy as he always was. As a leader I specifically asked for instances in which anyone (especially anyone with liberal stances) had been insulted, intimidated, belittled or even had someone be nasty to them. The answer was always "No"; I also had zero pm's complaining about any member (okay one, but that was really minor). Also as the only CHristian member of the leadership, I never banned anyone from that group, nor was I informed until after bans had happened.
denominator wrote:The moderators judged, harshly, all that apply, and then allowed only those who met their standards in.
If by this you mean we have set standards for membership and followed them........Yes, we have. How many clans have standards for membership? Lots of them. If our standards offended anyone, they had the right to complain about us to the mods; open their own discussion forum with the idea of making it a better one; or just refuse to deal with us.

Instead a small number of folks spammed our recruitment thread until it was shut down keeping us from adding new members (at the request of the mods) for about two weeks.
denominator wrote: It doesn't take a genius to look at the member list and see that there are far more conservatives than liberals allowed in, not to mention the comparative numbers of Christians to Atheists.

Sure, but that actually works in our favor in that even though our memebrship migh have been skewed, those in the minority could never show that anyone in the forum was rude or uncivil in any way. I asked the question several times and always got the same answer.
denominator wrote: In the end, to top it all off, they reacted childishly and immaturely when it was proven they were deceived, not only removing all Atheists from their forum
Where are you getting your information? The GH members were banned (again not by me), but they were not all the atheists in the clan. One of the mods (the one who originally started the group and the only remaining mod) is an Agnostic. Your information here is just wrong.
denominator wrote: (and I say their forum, because despite the fact it was supposed to be a collaboration, there was never an Atheist offered an administration or moderation position),

See above protectedbygold is the only mod at the moment. He is an Agnostic. He has been a mod of the FT from it's beginning.
denominator wrote:as well as privately complaining about cheating. I find it frustrating and disgraceful that they would not have the courtesy to confront those in question about their actions.
Don't get me wrong. I've spoken with snorri about the very same issues by pm. However, wait? They were in a forum that they had no business being in. Whether they agreed with our policies or not, we confronted them there. What discourtesy did we apparently do to these people? They knew up front from our own posts in our own (supposedly private) forum that we didn't appreciate the intrusion. They didn't just quietly take part in conversations either by the way. Simon and Skittles! (probably Snorri and DM) were actively posting in our rules thread agitating for a different standard of entry. It was a situation in which people were denied entry into a clan and then took steps to "correct" the situation. At the very least it was a small group trying to force their will upon another group. They did so through the following means:

1) Spamming our recruitment thread (hindering our attempts to gain members)
2) Complaining constantly about the relative numbers of liberals to conservatives; Christians to Atheists. Even though no credible evidence could be shown that anybody was had really even been rude to anyone else. There was no attempt to shut anyone up with regard to their opinion (I'll speak only from my part as I did not ban anyone the whole time).
3) On top of it all we had people coming in by using member's passwords.

The actual act itself was probably not that bad, but on the heels of a month and a half's concerted effort to show us how wrong we were, it amounted to the last straw. Yeah nobody was listening at that point.

Put it like this, your neighbor wakes you up at two in the morning in your bedroom to talk about how you're not cutting you grass enough. What's more important your grass, or the fact that you neighbor is sneaking into your house a two in the morning?

With all of this, look at the converse.

What was our conduct in these recruitment threads:

http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... 73&t=68972

Mind you I had resigned from this clan at the time of my posts, but I still responded immediately when the op asked me to stop.

http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewto ... 73&t=69673
and there is this one that I don’t think anybody has actually bothered with.

I don’t think that I (we) are better than anyone else, but I would state flatly that I believe most of the people in the Firseside Tavern either support or don’t care about the other clans going on. It would have been nice if we had been given the opportunity to start this clan without a bunch of folks griping and making it hard to hear much less focus on the real issues of getting thirty or so people talking to each other in a meaningful way. I believe we should have had the same consideration from the people that basically harassed the clan from the start, as we are giving (with no forethought or organization to it) to them.

I think it was just a stupid misunderstanding. The leadership of FT desired to avoid certain individuals. Some of us (also members of the FT) believed (incorrectly) that the idea was to avoid certain behavior. So some people (myself not included) attempted to demonstrate that the individuals could be separated from the behavior. In doing so, they introduced the individuals (but not the behavior) into the FT, thereby assaulting the purpose of the clan.

The misunderstanding was about what the purpose of the FT was. I originally thought the purpose was to avoid uncivil behavior. However, when I finally got around to reading PBG's original post in the recruitment thread, I found that the purpose was actually, from the start, to avoid certain people regardless of their behavior. It wasn't describing a place where everyone agreed to set irrationality aside; rather, it wanted nothing more than a place to avoid certain people. In fact, CrazyAnglican was the one who came up with the idea of it being a debate place to rationally discuss issues; it was an add-on idea that made the forum appear nobler than it was.

Perhaps but the evolutionary process away from the inital idea was interrupted by people who decided we needed to change immediately (from the outside as necessary). It still amounted to some folks disagreeing with and thereby wanting to force their will upon another group.

We didn't, at the timie realize that there was actually a disagreement about what was intended... we thought it was a disagreement about whether or not snorri and DM could behave. We took it for granted that anybody who could post civilly, rationally, and constructively would be allowed in... this was a misunderstanding about the purpose of the FT.

See, the way I thought it was:
The purpose of FT was to escape incivility and irrationality. Snorri was denied because it wasn't believed that he could post civilly, based on the evidence of his behavior in TNYB. We were trying to convince CA that he could behave himself in the setting of the FT (because we believed that he would be allowed in if he would behave himself and contribute constructively). However, CA did not believe that snorri could behave, and did not want to give him a chance to try.

This is the way it actualy was:
The purpose of FT was to escape certain people. Snorri was denied because he'd pissed off the wrong posters in TNYB. We were insisting that he should be let in by pointing out that he could post civily, but this was irrelevant. CA did not care that snorri could behave, because the point was that PBG and he found snorri himself unpleasant.

Then, reading a new thread in the GH, I learned that the vast majority of SV's polite debating in FT was actually by snorri. SV hoped that, when he finally told CA, this would be evidence that snorri was capable of behaving in FT, and that snorri would be given admission. When player was banned, I figured out that the FT wasn't what I thought it was, and left, predicting bad things when SV and snorri went public.

Most of my information comes from the Godless Heathens forum. As I stated above, I have rarely ventured outside of that with the exception of when something is recommended to me by my clan mates. You'll notice I haven't taken part in any of the recruitment threads for any of the discussion forums.

I have since applied for admission. I highly doubt that I'll get in, in light of recent discussions and actions, and how I've acted in these forums. But I still believe there was a critical issue in the admission program there, and that is what I mostly intend to discuss if I do get in.

I thoroughly believe that you can have heated civil discussions without going to insults. Often heated debates are the best way to discuss something. I also believe that anyone can act civil, if it was necessary. So my biggest beef with the Fireside Tavern was the "guilty until proven innocent" premise that they went on for admission. That is why I never applied before.

We (the Godless Heathens) complained often. From my initial understanding, the Fireside Tavern was initially meant to be a discussion forum between Atheists and Christians. I understand it evolved since then, but in it's initial form it would best be represented as being co-run by the Atheist's clan (the Godless Heathens), and the Christian's clan (the Jesus Freaks). However, there was never a representative from the GH on the admin, and, as I understand it, there was a JF.

In any future clans that I am a part of that are a collaboration like this, I will argue vehemently that each religious party/clan is given an administrator or moderator position, and no religious party/clan gets more than one. Because as it appears to me there is a double standard in clan admission, and the administration of said clan is biased.

That's exactly my point. Nobody in the forum was rude or uncivil. But that's because you only allowed people who were of the highest standing already in.

No, of course the Fireside Tavern doesn't care about other groups. They have the privilege of having been the first discussion group, and as such, will always be the "elite" group.

I honestly believe the Fireside Tavern would be much better off if it had allowed anybody in, then kicked on the basis of poor behaviour. Then the only people griping about it would have proven themselves unworthy in the forum and have no legitimate case against it. I think the discussions would benefit, and we would avoid this entire fiasco altogether.

Twill, can I point out something really really obvious? These 4 posters could have just used an account that could access the usergroup in question by just using a middleman account to send them the posts in said forum and then relay a reply. In other words, they could have communicated with the usergroup without trespassing the "boundries" you so graciously laid out.

With this fact in mind, what did they do wrong by eliminating a step?

Y'know, I used to think the mods actually had good reasons for making their decisions. Wicked's banning was one thing. An attack on the site like that isn't nice. After actually getting a chance to read the material, I found that I had learned all of that stuff just helping out in C&A. Every single bit of info. But I digress. Eventually these decisions just got dumber and had less reason behind them. With all these poor moves, the community gets madder and madder while Wicked and IPH laugh it up halfway across the internet. Tell me now, Twill. Are you going to use your brain here or are you going to be as stubborn as always?

That's exactly my point. Nobody in the forum was rude or uncivil. But that's because you only allowed people who were of the highest standing already in.
I have to respectfully disagree on this point ... but I have said all I will about it privately.

For the record, I apparently misunderstood the original intent of Fireside Tavern ... and that was part of why I was banned. The other part is that too many people like to pick out words and respond with their own pat phrases instead of really READING or listening to what people post.

If you don't have time/desire ... then don't respond... or you do yourself AND everyone else a disservice. (and no, I am not talking about spoofs, shenannigans, sarcasm or obviously intentional "misunderstandings").

With this fact in mind, what did they do wrong by eliminating a step?
Personally, I have mixed feelings about the whole incident.

I was initially under the impression (because of the references to GH versus Christians), that this took place in the religious forums. That is, I thought they were posing as Christians and then announced "surprise" ... "we are not".

Why would that matter? Why would it be differant if someone joined a religious forum (INCLUDING atheists!) instead of a general discussion forum (even a "private" one?). Because religion is pretty personal. I myself am (obviously!) willing to discuss all sorts of issues, face criticism head on. However, not everyone enjoys that. Some people just want a place to talk to folks with whom they more or less agree, perhaps discuss a few things within their beliefs, but without facing the barrage of haranges and criticism they might face in the truly public forums.

Look at it this way. What if I were to join an atheist forum intent on "converting" everyone there to Christianity. Some of you would (have in the public forums, certainly!) no doubt enjoy the challenge, perhaps see humor in it. However, some are probably just plain tired of hearing about religion. You have that right.

I suggest then, that perhaps there be a specific rule saying that you cannot intentionally join a forum under false pretenses, pretend to be something you are not, for hte purpose of ridicule, publicising private comments, etc. I DO think we have to be careful that such a rule doesn't become a "nazis police" type rule. For the most part, if someone says they believe the big spagghetti monstor created the universe, then who are we to disagree? The issue would only come up if someone joins and then basically says "gotcha" OR perhaps does post private comments into the public forum, etc.

Anyway, those are my thoughts.

QFT.

I would also like to add that I feel their intentions should be taken into account. Quite transparently, one can see that their goal was to prove they could act civilly when given an unprejudiced shot and thus get legitimate access to the forum. This is the exact opposite of trying to "cause chaos" that the rules are in place to prevent. Granted, rules have been broken so some sort of punishment is justified. But for the reasons I just gave, as well as mpjh's reason that the rules were confusing, I would suggest that the sentence be reduced to a temporary ban as the very most severe.

The only real weapon that is almost surefire is starting a forum using some free service and inviting every significant person on this website to join it in protest. But then everyone would want to be a leader in some way or there would be a fight over certain rules, causing factions to develop, and the one new forum would spawn a new new forum, and the cycle continues from there. Surefire indeed.

That other forum was created a while ago, and in fact still exists today.
