Ah... in that case you may be falling foul of copyright... unless you have permission to use the artwork?

captainwalrus wrote:It's looking good! You gave some 4 corner borders (I seem to be telling that to a lot of people lately). Also I'm not sure if your territory borders are that accurate in the green and purple area. It might just be the way you are combining territories but it seems off. Do you have google earth? If so that is very helpful to find the proper borders. Also, with the bonuses,
1 yellow could probably be 3 but it is close
2 Green should also be 3
3 purple could be 4 or 5, since it has 5 borders
4 blue could be 3 and it should also be in between orange and green on the list
5 grey could be 1 since it has 1 border

Keep up the good work!

I'll keep the ideas in mind in the next set of changes to the map, thanks for the input!

Indeed. I took a class on eastern art history and when i decided on this map, this was the picture I thought of first. It's pretty famous as far as Japanese block prints go.

This particular image was produced in 1826, so I believe that its in the public domain as in the US anything prior to the 1920s is, in Japan the rule is 50 years copyright after the artist's death and Katsushika Hokusai died in the 1850s.

I also think its covered under artisitic license as there have been made significant changes to the art work where it no longer serves the same function as the original. I'm no copyright lawyer, but I did have a class on copyright infringement for my art degree and that's what they told me then. Ultimately, its your guys call, but it should be safe to use it.

This is the kind of map that I really like. I would like to know how red is attacked by the mainland. I also would like a nice title and neater borders. How is okinowa attacked? The bonus structure needs work. I would like it very much if this map was quenched.

Thanks Sailorseal and .44,

The borders do need some cleaning up. I notice little bits whenever I go back and make a revision, its progressing though. If you see any specific areas that need improvement, let me know.

Any other comments and crits before I make another set of revisions to the map?

You have two places called Toyama. I think you mean Wakayama, for the blue one.

Sailorseal: What do you think would be appropriate bonuses?

Because to be honest, I just threw those numbers up based on general size of the territory.

Anyone else is free to chime in if they have an idea as well.

Here is what I would suggest:
Hokkaido 2
Tohoku 3
Chubu 7
Kanto 4
Chugoku 4
Shikoku 2
Kyushu 3
Okinawa 1 (The exception to my system)*
Kansai 5

How I got to each of these numbers except* was I did the number of territs that need to be defended to hold plus 1, for Okinawa it didn't make sense.

The major hurdles this map faces now, is to make better use of the available space, and to make names fit inside the territories.

As far as bonus structure goes, there are a couple of bonus calculator spreadsheets available in the mapmaking tools  http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1410

The other thing this map needs is a update...

Indeed it does. I'm just getting out of exams week which sucked up the past 2-3 weeks for me. I've got most of the fixes done but I'm still working out making the names fit inside the provinces which is a major pain in the rear.

Changes include:
1) compacted the size to make better use of the space.
2) Changed 2nd Toyama to Wakayama
3) Removed 3 provinces: one from Shikoku, one from Kyushu, one from Kanto
4) Adjusted the borders to get rid of four corner borders and to accommodate the names
5) Fit almost every name into the province it designated.
6) Adjusted the bonus scheme according to the spreadsheet provided in the tips and tools section.
7) Added those lil numbers.
8 ) Minor clean ups in graphics.
9) Toyed with the cities soldier circles. They are now more saturated. They also sit where the city is, as opposed to the previous system of a city dot and its soldier circle.

Suggestions asking for:
1) What should I do with the city circles. I don't like the bright red but I honestly have no idea what graphical approach I should take to it. Ideas?

2) Anything else that you all might like to point out.

Thanks for looking and your advice!

Army circles aren't ment to make it darker, they are to make it lighter.

How about just putting a red ring around the city circles, and having the interior be identical to other circles?

Nice job getting all the text in there as well. Looks pretty readable to me.

[Moved]

It would appear that development of this map has stalled. If the mapmaker wants to continue with the map, then one of the CAs will be able to help put the thread back into the Foundry system, after an update has been made. ;-)

Whatever. A Japan/samurai/manga map would be interesting. Don't let this idea drop!

I never really thought of it as a Manga map but that's how most people approach it. I'd be glad to pick it up again, but there's already a Japan map in progress. If a unique spin on this map comes to me, I'll go for it. Maybe tweek it more towards animation/legends/samurai ect. i'll give it some thought.
