Dugcarr is the first person that I remember being permabanned. It would have been around this time, probably a bit later in the year, and something about convincing people to throw games... It had to do with points and gross abuse of the game...

See, that sounds like a really good, valid reason to permaban someone. But instances like DM or DaGip, where they never actually did anyone harm with their antics there is really no valid reason anyone could give for a permaban.

It's really sad that power corrupts so thoroughly.

I think this sort of thing is what's wrong with the current moderation policies. Admittedly Koolbak isn't a mod, but people have been banned from the site for the most ridiculous reasons. The excessive number of locks had been a bit annoying, but those have been scaled back heavily since Wicked left. So, basically, the issue I have is virtually all the bans handed out because of stepping over the often unspecified lines in the forums. We started down this road with Xtra...the guy pissed me off, but in retrospect banning him because he was annoying is just as bad as banning Norse and DM for being offensive.

Basically, my problem is that the community is chiseled to meet the standards of someone who, for the most part, isn't a part of it (I refer to the mods that only come to the Offtopics to regulate, not those that actually contribute to them).

ok, I get your point Frigidus, and I am taking it into consideration...although there are a few of us that are "global mods" which in turn means watching over the whole forum..not just certain sub forums. Do you suggest that these mods you speak of should be more frequent in the off topic forum...and get to know off topics a bit more?

The question I have is do you really think it's fair to ask the moderators to be completely fluent in all areas of the forum? They are just volunteers don't forget. I remember when I was on TeamCC we were asked to put in a certain amount of time each week, an amount that I can promise almost all of the volunteers are exceeding by a large portion.

We all need to remember that most of the global moderators are also designated as head workers in other areas, see Steelhorse and Night Strike for example. They only have so much time they can put forth to just "cruising the forums" and keeping up on the ins and outs.

Obviously you can argue that we should have more, but do you really understand how difficult it is to recruit someone for these jobs? I don't think you do to be honest. There are plenty of folks who have been approached who return with the response, "No, I don't think so. Why should I put up with all those flamers and trolls when I'm here to have fun?" It's sort of a two way street. You guys want more moderators to be "part of the community" or just to have a few more moderators, but you also create a forum atmosphere that makes it difficult to find anyone who wants to help.

Two edged sword if I ever saw one. How do you propose fixing that problem? And no, paying them all isn't a viable option.

Really? I do. People who frequent the forums already, who pick up the habits of the posters, who build up a rapport with the community - those are the people best designed to be mods. They may just be volunteers, but on a site as big as CC, there are doubtless more volunteers than CC really knows what to do with, if they went with a "name yourself" program, and while many would doubtless just be ego tripping, there was once a time when the community had its own regular posters who would be respected and trusted in their own areas. Yet the only forum that seemed to embrace that much was Maps.

How do you know those people were not offered positions because there was a good reason not to? Simply because someone is recommended by their peers does not mean they are a proper fit to do the work.

The interesting dynamic to this discussion is that so many forum regulars blame the moderators for all of the downfall that happened to the forums, yet they refuse to accept that some of their beloved compatriots are just as responsible for the state in which the forum currently lies. It isn't the fault of either side in entirety, but rather a combination of the two, and to be honest I haven't seen much willingness by the forum regulars to let bygones be bygones and try behaving or help make this place a happier place to be. You say that more moderators or more time by each moderator is needed, but what about more forum troublemakers changing their ways, or just forum regulars in general stepping up to the plate and helping calm the crowds when things get dicey?

You don't have to have a fancy colored name to be helpful, and if you think these forums are so damaged, perhaps it is time for you to start doing your part as community members as well, don't you think? I do believe that there are some areas where TeamCC could be strengthened and that there could be some benefit to a bit more consistency by the moderators as a whole, but I don't think they are as damaging as the forum posters seem to think they are.

Perhaps a more rigorous training program for new moderators of whatever level would be appropriate so that consistency could be better achieved and on top of that, new moderators could be given a clear depiction of what the position is really like so they have a chance to back out before going public. Then you won't have moderators who disappear from burnout as often, or who get frustrated and stick to just one forum.

I think the best way to do things would be to have specific mods for specific areas of the site. I imagine it must be incredibly tough for global mods, as they are basically responsible for everything posted in the entire forum. Giving mods a more narrow scope would be a good start. It would also be nice, as The1exile mentioned, if they frequented the area they moderate enough to know what the community at large considers acceptable and unacceptable (even we realize that there are some boundaries). As it is right now, the mods and the random members are often quite disconnected.

It would be an interesting experiment, at the very least...it isn't like I would refuse the opportunity, but I imagine that I would be a miserable mod. There are very few things I would deem unacceptable, and locking spam would hurt me in a profound way.

I think there's a little misunderstanding here... most of us (mods) put in MORE hours than the minimum we've been requested to put in.
