Riskopoly (Board Game) [Abandoned]

Postby EvilOtto on Wed Jan 17, 2007 10:09 pm

There was a previous Monopoly map thread started by BananaStomper, but his map was abandoned. So let's try a clean start:

Image

As explained on the map, all of the trains connect. "Attack Jail" is a one way attack to the opposite corner. "Go" can attack any corner. All Chance spaces (question marks) are connected to the deck of Chance cards, and likewise all War Chest spaces (shields) connect to that deck (spaces can attack the deck and the deck can attack the spaces). The Chance/Chest spaces are part of their color's continent, and the decks are part of the orange and yellow continents.

The utilities (Electric Co. and Water Works) can attack their deed cards laying in the lower left corner of the board. These two deed cards can also attack each other. The bills are also territories connected to each space they touch, and the bills are part of their color's continent.

This is NOT a one directional board, attacks can go in either directions (except for the special corners as described above). There are 48 territories all together.

This is made entirely with original art, built from scratch. There is no copyrighted material on the map. The names of the spaces are all street names found in Atlantic City. The Parker Bros. patent for Monopoly expired in 1985.

I plan to add some more decoration (some dice and maybe a drink on a coaster...), but will wait until any further structural or game play issues are worked out.

Ideas floating around that could be discussed: make it one way, use Risk country names instead of the street names, no bonus for "free army" space, no penalty for tax space, more money around edge of board, make it a deck of "risk" cards instead of "chance" cards, put "just visiting" back in, etc.

I'll be play testing the layout this weekend on a monopoly board (although I'm still trying to come up with a way to use the cards without drawing little soldiers, cannons and horses on them all!).

I look forward to any comments.

Captain EO, I salute you. I'm just pissed that this will probably get forged before my map.

In keeping with the war theme, maybe "jail" could the brig?

How about a -1 for holding the jail/brig?

What do you think about the bonuses not being in the traditional Risk/Conquer Club style of a higher bonus for the more difficult the continent is to hold, but being in more of a Monopoly style where Park Place/Broadway are worth the absolute most and Baltic/Mediterranean the least. That could mean putting Park Place/Broadway as a +8 (if each continent around the board increases the bonus) or a +4 (if each side of the board increases the bonus).

progressing bonuses

Postby EvilOtto on Wed Jan 17, 2007 10:45 pm

I could be talked into the bonuses progressing around the board (maybe +1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5). I'm not so hot on two negative spaces (both tax and jail?) and it would make the light blue continent pretty well protected (no one wants to attack a -1 space!).

Don't worry, Oak, it'll probably be a while before I have time to do a small version of this... things get tight really fast, especially on the sideways spaces, unless I leave off the names!

I'm so glad that "Captain EO" nickname is catching on...

just a suggestion but maybe to make it more like CC, maybe the railroads can be sea routes/ferrys/warships?

Well I must say, the last attempt at this similar idea didn't work out so well, this one might have a chance.

I agree with Bad Speler...in making it more CC and war like perhaps.

(But then we might have to call it World-Domination-opoly ;))

This looks like it could be all kinds of fun.

I'd say your idea to change the street names to more risk-ish names is a good one. Kamchatka avenue and such. Another possibility would be to name streets after prominent CCers (lackattack ave., wicked st., reverend kyle way) but that leads to the possibility of people feeling excluded and/or pissed that they ended up as the street name for Baltic while someone else was the street name for Broadway. Still, it could be fun.

I'd say keep it two-way. We already have one one-way map that everyone complains about.

And I agree with bad speler, the icons and decorations could be gussied up somewhat and made more cc-ish.

Keep it up, tho. The map has a lot of potential.

Really? Huh. I'm not sure I understand the appeal of this. CCU still has normal college campus stuff, so why shouldn't the board game have normal board game stuff? CCU has a couple nods to CC (strategy, tactics,...) as this map has "free army", and "war chest".

On the contrary, I'm excited about attacking Atlantic Avenue from B. & O. Railroad (or B.B.Q. Railroad as I called it when I was 7). That's just cool!

Am I the only one?

I would love to play this map. Great job at redesigning. And your initial map/post is great. Looks like you put a lot of work into this already. Most impressive. As for now, I do not have any constructive feedback, but I'll keep checking the thread to see what comes of it.

I would also like to see you rename all of the territories to reflect conquer club ideas.

Here's a thought- there are 22 'regular' properties. But 4 railroads and 2 utilities which gives 28 total properties, correct? If you played the game there would be 28 property cards?

Well at this moment there happens to be exactly 28 maps. So you could rename each property after a map.

Other switches (some were mentioned in the other thread)

Go to jail = Busted for multi
Jail = Inactive account
Chance = roll dice
Luxury Tax = Buy Premium
Free Parking = Win Battle Royale
Community Chest = Club forum (though war chest is an okay thought)

etc- you have added a bit of a war theme but I think making it more of a CC theme is even more appealing.

Also- your title is Riskopoly...shouldn't that be ConquerClubopoly?

I have some bonus questions.

Why isn't red worth 3 and yellow worth 4.

First off it is going to be easier for orange to take the war chest then for yellow to take the chance because orange has a shield in his midst yet yellow would need to go conquer someplace nearby to reach a chance card to claim his needed deck.

Red gets an easy +1 from "free army" to get up to +3... I had this argument with myself for yellow as +4, but it is only four territories while orange is 6 territories.

Sounds like some people want to play on a "Conquer Club Website" map... but I'm not sure why it all belongs here (I can see it is because I put "Conquer Club the Board Game" in the forum title... maybe I should change that?).

I see we'll need a couple polls eventually...

I think the idea of it similar to CC rather than Monopoly...is more appealing to people. But I still like the idea of it...but eh.

Well... if you make a board game very similar to Conquer Club... you end up with Risk. Right?

I fear this is going to get all self-referential soon, or existential, or conquer-clubential!

Otto- I think the reason people like the idea of a conquer club themed game is because there are TONS of special edition monopoly games and novelties....some made by parker brothers, some not. It's relatively easy to do, but makes it a bit more interesting than the same generic monopoly board everyone has already played on.

I'll make two quick points and then call it a night.

First, there are indeed a TON of special edition monopoly boards but I disagree that they make the game more interesting. They make great gifts but does anyone actually play them? They add nothing to the game but a slight cosmetic face lift and there are now too many of them. They've become cliche. If I ever want to play Monopoly I always grab the original (although if someone had Galipolopoly, starring Mel Gibson, I'd give it a try).

Second, territories will be much easier to find by keeping it close to the original Monopoly board. If the logs say red placed 3 armies on Park Place, I know where to look. If the names are all different (and sideways and upside down) it will be hard to find things.

I posted the idea of using different names at the top of the thread, but I haven't heard a good argument to do so yet.

Well, for the Captain EO nickname to stick you first have to make it to Captain, private! :-p

I am a purist - I say stick with the tried and true board game titles as much as possible. I bet if you forged two different boards, 1 monopoly and 1 CC-opoly, over time people would tend to play the old one more... just like most games right now are played on the standard map.

I agree with you on every point, Otto. However, I'm still not sure it should/can be called Riskopoly. ConquerClubopoly (or something of the sort), but keep the names and the style as they are. CERTAINLY, don't change the names to those of different CC members.

I'm fine with keeping in the original theme of monopoly...but I'd like to see the nod to CC with 'CCopoly' or some sort of variant, as the name. ;)
