English? I don't understand you at all and there is no point to posting in this thread tlane unless you have something to add

He's saying that it might make joining the group a less attractive idea for some people if they still have to put an individual name with each map.
Also, instead of producing maps as a group and submitting them as "The Map Factory", it could instead become a group where people can discuss new ideas and how to make them work.
NOT, What are you afraid of there wa. ...a little compitition ?

Kill and wca will want to join eventually. Just give them time...

I may want to join just out of curiosity if you guys manage to produce some really quality stuff.
But until you manage to prove that this thing will work, I'm just not convinced that you guys will be able to get much done. Especially with no experienced mapmakers in the mix with you guys.

AADOMM will always be the mapmaker's home. But if you want to attempt to turn this into some kind of group to help new mapmakers, I wish you good luck. I'm just not yet convinced that this will work out as well as you think.

porkenbeans wrote: What are you afraid of there wa. ...a little compitition ?

I'll always welcome more quality maps. I don't see this as any kind of competition. If I was in this to be the best, I would be working on my maps right now, not letting them rot in the recycling bin
I'm just making maps for fun.
I'd actually like to see everyone else produce maps that are better than mine. It gives me a goal to reach for and increases the quality of the foundry as a whole.

I am very glad to hear you talk like that. It was your layer battle group that introduced me to your site link to d-art. Man, a lot of really cool art there. I only wished that CC had some artwork like that.
...alas -The Map Factory was born.

...Which gives me an idea. If you are on speaking terms with any of those folks there, maybe you could talk them in to letting us make a map or two out of some cool art of theirs ?

The problem with making maps from a piece of art is that things just don't always work out well for mapmaking.
The picture may look awesome, but turning it into a map might give it bad gameplay, or the extra things required to make the image playable might make a mess of the picture.
Making your own graphics will almost always be superior to using someone else's image to make your map.

If you turned this into a group for experimental map graphics, I would join in a second.
Just a place for people to try out new graphics styles. Something to bring Mapmaking and Art closer together.
I think that'd be fantastic. It might even bring around a few amazing new map styles.

Yes, these are my thoughts as well. Also when I say, "let us make some maps out of them", I am talking about cutting and pasting all over the place. Hell there may be artwork from several different pieces of cool art on one map. Check out johns Food Chain.

I think what sailor is saying is not to bypass the foundry xompketly but work on it in their firum too and take opinions from both sides this making better versions of the map quicker and faster, but someone was right in there post before me. AADOM is the mapmakers home. And why post it in xallouts if it's by invitation

Re: The Map Factory

Postby porkenbeans on Wed Mar 18, 2009 4:22 pm

I feel that I need to clarify a thing or two.

When I decided 2 months ago to try my hand at making a map, I thought that it would be relatively easy for me, as I am somewhat of an Artist. The new revamp of one of my favorite maps was so disappointing. Not only was it NOT an improvement, it was in my opinion, a hatchet job. British Isles WAS a colorful map,and some of you may know already that I like color.

I decided right there and then, that I would try to revamp the revamp. Hoping that if I do a good enough job that it would be welcomed with open arms. I had no idea of the stagnant, cookie cutter, and political world that I was entering. I spent less than a week on the project -v- the year and a half, that he revamp took. I received mostly praise from the community, Some saying that it was not only better than the revamp, but the original as well. But the political world of the foundry shot it down without hesitation.

With their uplifted noses, I was told to go away, and come back with something original.

Shumagin Islands would be my second attempt to win their approval. It seems that I went to far in the original end, and was basically told that it was too different.

Well, I am 5 maps in, and I am still getting shot down by the same group of 3 or 4 Foundry snobs.

After my time wadding through the foundry's threads, on all the recent quenches, I have noticed a reoccurring theme. A small, unimaginative group of mapmakers have made it, a competition between themselves.

It is my opinion that the structure of the foundry is to blame for this stagnant waist of space. How can you expect to see a great deal accomplished, when you are asking these competing mapmakers to work together for a common cause ?
All that has transpired is, the formation of a group of snobs that only have one common goal. -To shoot down any that would dare tread on their territory.

Hence my call for the formation of a small group of talented people, to actually come together and work as a team for a common goal. The aforementioned snobs have recognized the threat, and already come out to do what they do best. Kill it before it grows. They even want to try and write our charter. "You can call yourselves the beginners map group". LOL.

I have one more thing to say before I hit enter.

This group, "The Map Factory", is open by invite only. That is to say, I will not stand for any infiltration by the snobs in an attempt to kill the vine from the inside. That is not to say, that all the snobs are ineligible. I do have a big heart, and would welcome with open arms the expertise that some of them possess. I have noticed one name in particular that has been added to the group, that I am NOT quite sure of. This person has gone out of his way to stalk me in many threads. He always has nothing but negative comments for me. It is a disappointment to me in that we share the the taste in music.

I lied, I have one more thing to say.

I am pleased that sailor has stepped up and answered my call for an Organizer. Sailor, I invited you because you seem to me, to be a guy with a good head on his shoulders. I do not agree with some of your views, and you can be a horses ass sometimes. But you do seem to have the piss and vinegar it will take to do some of the spearheading. Just remember, Why this group was formed. We are not the foundry snobs. in fact I see you as our attack dog when necessary. 8-)

Lol. I can see where you're coming from pork, but I don't think the experienced mapmakers are making a deliberate effort to shoot down new ideas for the sake of "keeping their status". Many of them are just really reluctant to accept things that are out of the ordinary. I've had a ton of map ideas that I thought were great and didn't make it... you can search the Recycle Bin if you want. Although they frustrate me sometimes, I don't think they are as "evil" as you say. Closed minded, maybe, but it's hard to imagine that people who put so much time into this site for free are out to hurt it, even if they do make a lot of cookie cutter maps.

Oh, and if I ever get a few quenched, I'll try not to become a snob. ;)

I'm starting to think I might want to join this group.
I won't be participating in creation of any of the group maps, but I could lend a bit of support to anyone trying something really unique.

Fantastic, you are welcomed to join us. wca.
In a day or two, we should be able to have a plan of attack in place. I am sorry that I can not do much today as it is a bad day. That is, I am not feeling well.
Although, this group coming together makes me feel a bit better. I see good things ahead. So go ahead and pop the champagne, and mark this as the opening day of The Map Factory. :D

Oh yeah, once a final list of members is complete, I will etch them to the plaque on my sig. If your name is there, you are authorized to use our sig. as your own, if you wish.

Thank you for all the positive responses to my invitation.
This was to be, open to invite only. Well the word must have gotten out, because I have received many requests to join.
I have decided to limit the number of members to an even dozen. At least to start with. If you are one that is not included, please do not be discouraged. We will accept additional members as time goes by. Those that visit our workshop and prove to have something meaningful, and creative to say, your membership will undoubtedly be granted.
Thanks again.

John, mini, sailor, and ustus, Please get with me to discuss this.

He means you need to edit the first post to make the title read 'The Map Factory [Social][Closed]' so people know that we're not competative and we're not accepting new members at the moment. Even better 'The Map Machine [Social][Closed]' becuase thats what we should call ourselves! A little alliteration goes a long way!
