I was thinking of this idea as well, and remembered some of the maps that L. Frank Baum put in his books. I found them in Wikipedia, where it is claimed that the copyright has expired (at least in the US) based on the many years that have passed since LFB's death. I don't know if this would apply worldwide. There is also the question of copyright claimed by later publishers, but this might be avoided by minor revisions to the original works (which is the way, I believe, this later publishers establish their claims). For example, restoring LFB's original east/west swap (which his publisher "corrected") might suffice.
