That being said, I think an objective of "capture any X territories" sounds very boring. It would be like playing on St. Patricks Day but instead of going for the center you just need to capture 5 total territories? I don't think that would be as much fun.
Now if the make each of the friends have different characteristics and tie that into gameplay I think you have a much more interesting idea. Try to find some list of personality traits and make each friend represent a trait or characteristic. Then give that friend a corresponding role on the map.
ie- the gregarious friend will have more borders than anyone else
the loner will have few borders or one way borders
the generous one gives you a bonus
the selfish one gives a negative bonus
etc
