Infinitely better! Instead of putting the one connection straight across land, make the map wider and move them so they stay in the water.

Have tried another version and have done the whole thing in a rough sort of fashion.

I realise that some of the text isn't that readable, anyone got suggestions of colour schemes to use with the text and font to use?

Things like the perfect alignment of the bonus numbers can be fixed easily, so comments like that are not what I'm after just now. More general design and improvement comments are what I'd like.

Cheers.

Stats:
The North - 5 territories
Central Plateau - 5
East Coast - 4
Southern North - 4
Sunshine Territories - 3
Midlands - 8
Southland - 6

Total = 35 territories.

Edit in: Just noticed I'm missing the number marker for Ruapehu. Will be fixed.

Okay this map is looking better but there is much work to do.

1. First of all, I do not agree with the idea of removing the straits. They were a great idea for connecting the continents. Just because one single person told you to remove them you do not have to do that. You can decide what is best for your map or else put up a poll.
2. The army shadows are not large enough and their shape is strange.
3. The fonts are not very legible...you will have to try different fonts.
4. I am not entirely convinced with the sea route graphics. Work a bit on them, make them more uniform.

Good luck with your map!

1) A poll... excellent idea! I have now done so!
2) Easily fixed. Will maybe leave this till last once I've got everything else sorted.
3) Figured this would be the case. Cause I know what they say I can read them... just. Will have a play around with fonts and styles, although suggestions are always welcome!!
4) Ditto. They're just something I quickly drew by hand to give the general impression. I think most graphics will be re-done and improved once I get a good idea on what the final layout is going to be.

thanks for the feedback.

Ok, have changed the design a little bit.

Have rotated the map so it is more screen friendly.

Have included the sea territories again as of the massive number of people that voted in the poll (5 people), 3 said they were a good idea.

Have done some minor decoration to the map, but obviously aesthetics can be dealt with at a later time.

Anyone got any suggestions and comments for this? The main thing I'm pretty sure I'm going to change is the bonus legend. Got to do something with it to make it blend more and look better, rather than it being a slab on the image.

Anyone got a better suggestion for the bonuses? I've been quite harsh with the amount that you get at the minute, as I don't think any continent will be easy to hold. The North is prob the easiest. Should it stay 2 and the other bumped up by one?

Cheers.

Ok have done a small update to change the bonus legend. Have made it the All Black's rugby top.

Someone want to give me any sort of comments please?!!!

Still not sure about the bonus legend. What sort of thing could I do to make it look good?

Can you get to Taupo from Ruapeho? (across the tongariro? <- or is that someplace else!)

One thing that I think would be ace for a NZ map would be Natural Disasters...

The country is so plagued by them that it would be ace to include them!!

Tongariro is the right place, and no you can't get from Taupo to Ruaehu. Mountains are in teh way.

Wisse - I see what you mean about the font. The map in teh post before my last one, is it more legible? As I didn't do anything to the font from that map to the next one, yet it has definitely changed when saving! Will work on it.

Any other comments?

You should use the mountains between the continents. Why keep them between territories of the same continent??
Some names should be replaced, they are not really connected to their territories.
The yellow area is wasted with those ocean territories there. And in fact I think 4 ocean territories is too much (and the idea is interesting, but with many borders in the surrounding coast they are more creating playability problems than helping).
In fact, I suggest you to think about a better way to distribute the countries among continents, mainly in the North island.

With regard to the mountains, they are where they are as that is where they are in NZ.

I don't want to put mountains where they don't actually appear in the country.

I also thought it would make it more interesting having a continent that wasn't regularly shaped, so not so easy to defend.

DO you have any suggestions on how to improve the continent lay out?

I could change the sea territories to just 1 - would that make things better?

Also the split yellow continent was also something I thought would be quite interesting, as it makes it different to other maps. Anyone else think it wouldn't make the map better?

i agree with happy about the t-shirt. also every yellow country is a border all 4 of them. it should definitly get a bigger bonus then 2

I think just about every bonus needs to be changed...

yellow = +2 ¤ 4 territories, 4 borders

pink = +3 ¤ 6 territories, 6 borders

maroon = +2 ¤ 5 territories, 3 borders

light blue = +2 ¤ 4 territories, 4 borders

grey = +5 ¤ 7 territories, 7 borders

green= +3 ¤ 5 territories, 4 borders

the current state of this map looks very unplayable and more so like an elimination fest instead of trying to gain bonuses.

your only real option for a bonus is trying to control lower east coast, mt cook and everything to the south of that until you have enough to protect 3 borders and then going for the rest of grey for an eight point bonus...

I like the idea of a split "continent", but the map really needs to be converted into a CC map.

I like the map you posted on the 18th Jan, it is infinately better than ur latest one. The background with the maori looks much better and nicer on the eyes and the computer friendly orientation gives me a headache. I like the cook straigts as a territory. I dont like the borders of either of the maps, it looks like the middle east borders. Also there should be an airport in the south, because, as nobody will be challenging for Midlands, as soon as somebody conquered the South, capturing the Midlands wouldnt be too hard, with them having 3 borders and a bonus of 8.

As a kiwi I understand the 'T-shirt' and think it's great. The Moari I can take or leave.

I'd love to play a game on this map, and will definitly be trying it on paper.

Keep up the good work :D

New Zealand has alot to offer

Postby golilox on Thu Feb 08, 2007 4:37 am

I like the straights, but do not agree with there being 2 ways to get to stewart Island because as a new zealander i know the only way to get there is via Invercargill.

I think your onto a winner with the airports.

I think the way to get around the problem of playability being a long island as everyone keeps telling you might be to expand on the airport idea. i'm not sure if you know newzealand well but some airports only fly to surtain places and so on, eg wanaka has an airport but u can usually have to go via Christchurch etc.

Maybe think outside the square and come up with new formulas rather than the same old tried and true ones. eg, sea currents and the natural disasters as someone else said. Or the sate highway 1 which goes down the middle of nz

I dunno really just an ideas.

Youve prob seen this but you called lower west coast lower east coast.

Well good luck and just remember sometimes too many ideas can be negitive for the creative process and don't take them all onboard. :) (This said after i have bombarded you with many lol)

its a good map--how do these maps get picked to play on--also you might want to add a colored flag for each person playing and put them in each area and if you hold that area and you are that color you get 2 extra armies--i think that adds to the game

Auckland should b worth the most but you should split it up into cities such as waitakerie(west) , Auckland Central, Manukau (south), east and north shore

Great idea and good work so far!

I wonder if you could add the Chatham Islands to the map?

Image

and Raoul Island

Image

and maybe the Auckland Islands (though these have never been inhabited for long since the 18th century)
