Is your rank really worth more than a fun game?

Postby TheSupremeCourt on Tue May 12, 2009 6:03 am

Every single time I get the upper hand on a high-ranked player in a rt game they vanish, turning an enjoyable game into a 24-hour slog. It's dull. It's lame. The high-ranked player then appears 10 hours later and hits me back, getting the advantage back. YAY.

This is a game site. I'm guessing you're here because you find Risk fun, not because you want an extra +20 points. If you just want the points, go join a site that doesn't even have the game. Hell, write your name down on a piece of paper with a number after it. Do you really need to compensate for something that much?

(and yeah, I know I should get premium if I don't want this to happen. Shame people are jerks enough that I need to take measures against them)

Honestly, who are you to tell someone why they should be playing the game? If they get more enjoyment from winning than playing, that's their thing.

I assume you're playing freestyle? Otherwise what difference does it make per "the upper hand" whether someone takes their turn in 5 minutes or 10 hours? My solution is don't ever play freestyle. I have no problem admitting that I don't have the stomach for it. ;)

People tend to have more fun when they're winning. Sometimes I notice myself play the games that I know I will win before the ones I think I might lose. Part of it is denial I guess.

By the way, get premium.

Why do you think they have a high rank in the first place? Can't beat those freestyle "tactics".

You just need to play reasonable players, and you probably won't find them amidst the swarms of whiny toddlers who play freestyle. If you really want to play those games, find some competitors in live chat.

ohhh what a fun topic... and likely to produce denial in some, and ruffle some feathers too...

everybody is here to have fun, and winning is naturally part of the fun...
so really, that balance point will vary from player to player...

the op has DOUBLE my win rate, so does than mean he values WINNING more than i do?
we've played about the same # of games, he's gained 603 points while i've gained 2100...
so does that mean i value RANK more than he does?

But just because you value something, doesn't mean you can achieve it...
and there is still a balance between what you value, and what you're willing to do for it...
I love winning, yet i lose 70% of my games... i would LIKE to win 50%, but i have more fun playing on difficult settings.

The point is... the answer is variable to the person, and perhaps even to their mood at the time.

I have found that one's perception of anothers rankness is generally a pretty subjective thing.

Its nothing to do with points that people want to win.
You rank is high(LT).
You shouldn't play freestyle if you do not like the gameplay.
Happy Days :)

Play sequential, and you won't have the problem...

If rank doessnt matter to you, you can play alot of 1vs1 seq. at a day :P
But if you want a high rank, 1vs1 seq. won't work :D

Robinette makes some good points for sure.

I'd like to think that I'm actually having more fun now than I had in the past---because my Rank is actually going up! So, it seems my rank does contribute to my game fun.

That said, what really drives my fun are the maps---especially the new ones that come out. I'm most always eager to play on the ones I can understand (ha), and this freshness every couple of weeks has always been invigorating. Though going back to some of the old maps I've always enjoyed is just as good as new one...

Hm, so...did I answer anything? :)

Well either way Conquerclub is for enjoyment. To be honest I play for both. I enjoy having fun but like winning the points as well. It's really tough not to get caught up in the moment, and sometimes people take it to far, but such is life. Sometimes it is fun to get a rank, and most people get a rank through fun games of their choosing maybe they have fun with 1 specific map or many different types.

Koe, who cares about rank? Your avatar picture alone should merit you the #1 ranking. Two girls kissing... <drool>

I've always been at least mildly amused at the idea that people with low scores are having fun, while those that have high scores are choosing to make their lives unhappier in pursuit of a number. I suppose the line of reasoning goes that the typical high-ranker wants to play fun games like doodle fog freestyle - fun for all those with the attention span of a puppy - or 8 man escalting games on maps they haven't even played before - if fun involves playing awfully, blindly and retardedly - but wrench themselves away from all that fun stuff to play games they actually know how to play. How boring! How closed-minded! How unadventurous!

I posted something similar in another thread earlier on, but this seems more appropriate now...

If CC can incorporate non-ranked games along with ranked games, then people can have fun when they want, but still have the option of point-grinding. It would be as simple as asking a player if he wants to make a ranked game or not.

I agree 100%.

Having this option would be the the single best move that Lack could ever make.

Site traffic would double over night.

But would sales of premium? Personally this is a bad move. It would be abused 10 times over. If you want to play a map / game you need to risk points for it. No free rides to try maps / play on settings you are not used to. Want to learn, then suck it up like the rest of us and risk some points for it.

I believe that demonfork is saying exactly what you are (though in a more sarcastic manner). <smile>

The idea of un-ranked games is a good one as is done on many Chess sites... but even with that option available the majority of matches there are still ranked. Thing is, players can still choose to have fun games regardless of the status of players whenever they want. Rank is an indicator of your opponant and not much else. If games weren't fun who would bother playing?
