Lame Tactics? Discuss.

Postby Selucid Empire on Sat May 16, 2009 7:48 am

I thought I'd put this up there. When it comes to an unpleasant game with certain individuals, there are the regular negative experiences. The constant cursing, the harrassment by chat... allies that kill you instead of help you.

But, what about being told you are using lame tactics? In a game where diplomacy is encouraged... in a game where the casual gamer is encouraged to play casually (morning cup of coffee... between classes and all...) What do you consider good reason to label another's tactics as "lame"?

Have you ever been told your tactics were lame and wondered why?

Lame Tactics would include:
-Killing all of your enemies troops except for one, and then building instead of finishing him or her off. Eventually your enemy can deadbeat to get out of the stalemate but it is ultra lame
-Gaming freestyle to ensure a double turn by letting time run out and guaranteeing that you win on objective maps
-Trying to keep lots of games running and saving the ones you will win in....effectively making you lose a bunch in a row and then win a bunch in a row
-Point dumping and then winning 700 points against 7 innocent people

These three will get you into trouble though. The other one is not illegal, but people are pushing so that the game engine does not allow it to happen.

If you don't want to deal with lame tactics, you should avoid playing 24 hour freestyle games for starters. The above mentioned is exactly what that style of play encourages; mainly because it helps you win. I don't do it because I don't have the time to sit there and watch the timer. In fact I don't play that style, but if you do, you should assume that there will be players in the game who wait 23 hours and 38 minutes before starting their turn. Once you realize this, its your own fault if you keep joining games with those settings.

As for the other things, yeah those people are being rude.

Game 4869419

I played this game with Darthvadar. Game chat started out simple enough. "Hellos", "thanks for joining"... even a "let me know if you have any questions" I think by calling him hun I freaked him out a bit originally until I confirmed I wasn't some creepy guy over the internet.

Anyway... we played a bit of realtime expanding from our castles and I had to leave one class and go to another that particular class didn't have a computer or such so when I went to the library to print off an assignement, I logged in and made my move to have this said about me:

"Lame Tactics"
"Foed"

Darthvadar proceeded to wait until the very last minute of the following round before moving again. I have to be very honest, I can't always play RT. Rabid and I aren't always online and because we play team games together and such, we try to make our moves while together, we're in alot of the same classes so in team games and even in non-team games we can make our moves without much of a wait. (It's a flip of a coin to see who gets to make the first move if it's freestyle non-team) This player moved in his other games and started more games refusing to move in ours.

Finally in the last minute he started his move and I was fortunate enough to be on at that minute when the round ended and could start the next round.

As for freestyle 24 hours, I must admit that it is 100% in my element of gameplay. It's 24 hours so it's casual and it's freestyle meaning there is a bit of a real-battle element since at any round you may be on at the same time as your opponent and can enter a realtime clash that you don't see in Sequential. Rabid and I are playing one Sequential doubles match because it is sorta what the Spartan clan set as a regulation but we both prefer to coordinate in freestyle.

the most impostant part of the posted game is this
you won
the aforementioned "lame tactics" is simply a method of saying
either
"i lost??? you must be better than me! FOED!!! so i wont lose points to you, jerk"
OR
"You beat me and are a low rank?! meaning you could take more points from me than usual!!!!! FOED!!! because im a wuss."
:) i hope my explanation of assholes er ... rude people helped

Eliminate Freestyle Double Turns

For those of us who have fallen victim to the casual freestyle double turn lame tactic, that thread comes highly recommended. Sully and Lance have already commented on it as have a quite a few other players. I'm doing my bit to raise awareness and encourage other players to lobby for the elimination of double turns in casual freestyle.

This Darthvadar sounds like a child. I think a.sub is spot on. It appears Darthvadar himself has refused to play realtime himself but when someone else does it to him (even though you actually had class) it's "lame tactics" puh-leez.

I wonder about failed take-out attempts in a multiplayer game. As for the double turns lol... if double-turns are allowed, I don't see it as such a cheap way to win. Besides, it also makes the clock predictable for the opponent who has as much of a chance of being there as they do of not being there.

In fact... Darthvadar should see this. I wanna see if he has anything to say about it :D If you run into him someone else is bound to as well.

You want a lame tactic?

Giving up hafway through a game just because your bonus got broken.

I had this player (who I will NOT name) who when his bonus got broken said "ah well that's my game over." when it was round 44 and he had the second most amount of troops on the board out of 5 players left. He gives up every game as soon as his bonus gets broken. Seriously thats lame...

Freestyle has it's quirks and perks and all players have the same opportunities.
Clickable maps is probably a bigger advantage than most, particularly in speed
games with multiple players. Neither CM or "double turns" are actually lame. as
it's all in the game and if you can't figure out how to deal with it then a simple
solution is sequencial.

Lame is not returning to take turns when your fate is no longer in doubt.

Yes, good call...one of the lamest things that someone can do in the game.

That's what happened to me. I was facing someone who was newer like had never played before and I myself am pretty new. Well he just totally quit and I had to wait 3 days for the game to end because he wouldn't take his turn. Finally the computer eliminated him for missing too many turns. It was really lame.
