From what I've seen in my 6 months here, racism is dealt with swiftly and the punishment is proportionate to the offence.

wonderful... so, as a person of colour or whichever minority you belong to, how many times have you been called something racist and/or derogatory and had swift and sufficient action from the mods? i was just called "nshooter" within this very thread about racism on CC, and had an admin was unable to figure out how or why that was even racist. i find it patently amusing that someone NOT of colour can comment on how sufficiently the racism within this site is dealt with, when they have never had to deal with it in their life...-0

p.p.s.-funny, i am trying to perpetuate something that is a constant on CC? it has been open season on me for over 3 months with racist comments, and nothing has been done to any of the offenders. to be banned for using certain language, and then to return using the same language, proves the offending member should be given a longer ban or perma-ban. this is not one incident being rehashed. these are continual and separate incidents that i must deal with.

It goes to show you that, we have moderators who think racism is dead. Of course, they may have lived in a "white bread" world where they see, hear or speak no "bigotry."

Yet, spell, speak or write FLAME WARS and you'll feel the sting of the master's whip!

The punishment issued for alleged acts of "violation of terms of service," is uneven, unfair and biased, PERIOD!

A close friend of mine was called a "stupid cunt" in one of her games. She reported it to a mod and was told to "put the player on ignore".
Needless to say , -she won't be renewing.

Good topic. Probably will go on forever because of it's sensitivity. owenshooter, my dear multi! To play devil's advocate, I believe that someone referring to you as "Nshooter" was out of laziness and not a racial remark. However, on the other hand...it could have been a very poor attempt to bait you. Being a racial minority (Korean), trust me - I've been beaten up when I was a kid, just because of my colour. I took many different types of martial arts and obtained a black belt in each discipline I studied...that's about 5 of them. No one ever touched me again. I can't even count how many jobs/promotions I was passed up because of my skin colour. That being said, I think I didn't expect to experience racism in CC, but that was a lost cause. I have complained in the past about multiple incidents where I was the victim of racial abuse on CC. I complained and reported it to CC....and found that they took it very lightly. I think what I began to learn was that being an online gaming site, it's not like 'real life' - obviously, there would be much more harsher repercussions for this type of behaviour. Also, the person who handled my request wasn't perhaps understanding enough. I think it really takes one who has been in that situation, to truly understand why people who are visible minorities are more sensitive to racial remarks. Trust me, I have no problems cracking jokes about other asians (i.e. bad drivers), but when you start throwing around comments in my case such as 'chink', you're damn right I'm going to make a stink about it. Personally speaking, I still don't think that CC takes racism seriously enough. Just my two cents.

Nope, that's giving them a free-pass excuse, and it doesn't wash. I'm about as "white bread" as you can get. German/British ancestry and grew up in small-town Nebraska with nary a person of color in the whole place. Fortunately for me, I joined the Air Force and learned quickly that the strengths of individuals had nothing at all to do with the color of their skin or their sex (or sexual orientation, for that matter). I learned the ability to put myself into someone else's shoes and view things from their perspective...THAT'S all that's needed to counter racism (and any other form of prejudice).

Thank God that the military has been light years ahead of society in general in this respect (which fascinates me to no end, given the tendency for conservatism in the military).

Don't give them the excuse of "haven't had to live it"...that's as unacceptable an excuse as there is out there.

Because like you, he has the freedom to express his opinion. Again, if you were a visible minority, then you would understand the hardships we have experienced and why we are sensitive.

I use such flippant language to illustrate a point; as there is a danger that we mix one thing with the other. I think many, including the mods, fall into the trap of thinking 'Ahh the shooters at it again.. any excuse for a little stirring!'
Some will say he deserves disdain in all cases as the boy just calls wolf too often to be taken seriously... it might be a valid excuse.


In an unrelated case, a user was swiftly sanctioned: posts edited, banned for 24 hours for repeated bigoted abuse and calling a member 'cuntniggerjew'. Now if someone called me any of these i would have no problem with it on a personal level, I would be proud to be all three! I am sure my stock has come from each at some time on the Jiminski family tree. But most of my roots are hidden enough for my mixed heritage to fade from view. i am ostensibly of white, Anglo-Saxon ancestry.. brown eyes, so certainly I am a mongrel.

What i mean is, it is easy for me to ignore or pass-off such random, buck-shot abuse when aimed at me. I have no real concept of what it is to be the only black kid in the class.

So, it may be too easy to only see one perspective.. or at least not register the importance of certain issues.

My real question is: Is CC adequate in its rulings on this?

Trying to get it back on topic, I see that the poll favours in simply turning a blind eye to it all. As I've stated, it's easier for people not to be indifferent because they haven't experienced or been exposed to racial abuse. I can even recall many years back in public school, when my caucasian friend was getting beat up by asians. I intervened and ended up getting my ass kicked too, but I knew how he felt. We were best of friends for a very long time and he remembers even to this day what I did for him, and he even admitted that he realizes the hardships one has to go through when you're a visible minority.

well, i personally feel as though i have pretty thick skin, and can take any remark about me pretty well, especially if its on the internet. from that experience, i would say that its a "whatever" type of matter and should be let go.

BUT, I do believe that if we have community guidelines, and they have been provided by various forum goers, then they should be followed. if you say bigotry or whatever you wanna call it is not allowed, then don't allow it. I personally think its preposterous that OptimusPrime could just tell owenshooter that he couldn't find nshooter in the racism dictionary and then have the audacity to put a fucking at the end of his statement. Seriously? You're a fucking shit community manager replacement then. If you say that biggotry is allowed in no circumstances, you better be able to back that up. if "team cc" is really gonna take that "turn the other cheek and show your brown eye and let yourself get gangbanged by racists" attitude, then at least change the fucking community guidelines so that we know you're not gonna do anything about it.

My how this topic has grown over 24 hours! Lets try to keep from going in circles, and lets work towards an end:

So lets see if we can get to the main issues, or issues purported, of both sides within these pages:

• Bigotry is more prevalent in CC than thought---a large portion occurs in Game Chats and PM, though some also occurrs in the Forums (I'm assumingly mostly GD, Off Topics, and Usergroups).
• Bigotry is ineffectively or inconsistently dealt with. I.E. Team CC does this, and/or Conquer Club in general does not offer enough tools (like the Foe List, Reporting Posts) to add to a user's arsenal to combat such issues.
• Bigotry should be punished more severely than other "No-No's" from the Community Guidelines.

• Bigotry is being used by individuals to troll/spam/cause general chaos for fun.
• Bigotry is dealt with when reported.

I think that covers the majority of the points within these pages---if I've missed something please feel free to bring it to my attention.

Okay, so we know the general two sides of the issue. Now where's the middle ground?

Due to the sensitive nature of Bigotry on a user, group of users, or Community in general (as opposed to say simply someone spamming throughout the forum), would the Community be happier with an increased punishment scale for Bigotry? Currently it follows the routine of all Community Guidelines: Warning, Small Vacation, Increased Vacation, Permanent Vacation.

Would something like: Warning (we will most always have a warning before any punishment it given), Increased Vacation, Permanent Vacation.

Would this increased punishment scale not only help curb Bigotry, but increase overall user and community happiness? Would it at least be a first step in the right direction?

Currently, as you all know, the Conquer Club offers the Foe List as a means for users to block out material they find offensive/annoying/etc. Additionally, also built within the forum software is the Report a Post Feature to notify Team CC of specific posts made by a user or users that one believes to be against the Community Guidelines.

Is there some additional tool that we could add to the arsenal of Community Members that would increase the overall happiness of the user and Community at large? Any ideas?
