Mesoamerican/South American city-fight?

Postby pacman572 on Thu Jun 18, 2009 6:15 pm

This has undoubtedly been suggested before more times than people care to read, but I think it would be a great map, it just requires some fresh input.

So, we start with a view from above of an ancient city, potentially Mayan, Aztec, Incan, etc. The main features could include:

1. A large, central temple(as the centre piece), divided into several territories, with three or more tiers, with flat spots between each. The whole of the temple gains a BIG bonus, or, it could act as an objective to hold to win the game. The story behind this objective, for example, is that it belongs to the most powerful God of the selected race's pantheon, and holding it gains their favour, so they will destroy your enemies for you. A downside to this is that in order to gain that favour, the priests of the temple sacrifice x amount of troops per turn to appease the God.

2. Several smaller temples forming a square around the main temple, dedicated to lesser Gods. Holding one gains a medium bonus.

3. Forming yet another square around the temples, a feature with a small bonus in each corner of the map. Potentially a dock/jetty for escape or water access, some small farms and crop fields, a city barracks, etc etc.

4. Between the corner features, a series of living areas or slums, forming the main population and providing handy connections between each feature.

I think this image explains fairly well the setup I'm trying to suggest, perhaps with a lot less fields, a lot more huts, and a squareish layout.

I think that sounds absolutely awesome, may be slightly hard to incorporate the gods part, reason being neutral player would have to kill your enemy... just see the coding as pretty goddamn difficult.

Apart from that, it sounds like a really good map, maybe get together with a Cartographer and see where you can take it :)

What I meant with that is just that you win the game, no fancy mechanics, just nice and simple. ;)

How about a couple of temples - you could have an Arms Race type scenario - if you hold the temple then the Gods give you 50 armies (reincarnated troops / mystical creature-warriors)?

Oaktown started a Classic Maya Era map a while ago, but it took a backseat to other projects and was Vacationed. I'm still quite fond of the map, however, and of the niche theme it fills.

I've already suggested multiple temples. :)

No idea about the Arms Race suggestion, only played that map once or twice and didn't like it, can you elaborate?

If I understand correctly, you have a main temple and several smaller temples.

My idea was for 2 main temples - each giving a massive bonus (just like the Warheads in Arms Race) - they effectively become objectives since the bonus usually leads to the game ending. Just an idea.

Sounds good, although maybe in that case it may make more sense for it to be two warring cities with an area of grassland/jungle between them?
