Question from a newbie

Postby spinround on Sun Nov 08, 2009 10:47 am

I was recently in a game against a player who stated me the following:

You have two accounts. What's the name of the other one?

I'm not sure where this was coming from but I wanted to know does having more than one account allow you to win games? I have been looking at the strategy forum and there is nothing in there about having more than one account to make you win.

I can only assume that I was asked this because I won. I'd like to think that it was my 20 years of experience playing the game that has given me sound tactics and a solid strategy that made me win the game.

If anyone can clear this up for me I would appreciate it.

He is accusing you of having more than 1 account. Having more than 1 account is against the rules and will get you in trouble.

Okay, well can you help me understand the advantage of having more than one account. How would that help me win a game. I joined the site on Friday and I really enjoy playing here but I haven't even played 20 games and someone is accusing me of cheating.

Is this common on this site? Maybe it's not worth my time to play here. I may just stick to my board game even thought it takes more time to set up and play a game. It's hard to be called a cheater when you can see your opponent.

Thanks for the insight Evil Semp.

Maybe the fact that you're new and good created that remark.
Most people are weak when starting, and your opponent assumed you were weak (you were probably a new recruit when starting that game). It can happen on this site (people do assume that multies are around), but it's not usual. And since you're no new recruit any more, I doubt it will happen again soon.

Just see it as a compliment for now :D

Well thanks for the kind words, I guess I can take it that way. I just don't like being called a cheater, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I am sure you were accused of it like the player said earlier. Because you are a new player but yet you were still good. So your opponent assumed you have played before and that this is your 2nd account.

Having 2 accounts is against the rules. It can give you an unfair advantage in a few ways. 1) if you join a multiplayer standard game with both accounts then you can basically play both accounts to try and help 1 account (your main 1) win. 2) if you play 1v1 games between your 2 accounts than you can "point dump" or intentionally lose all of the points from 1 account to the other to get a higher rank on one account.

This site is fantastic. There are sore losers on here but don't let them put a bad taste in your mouth. There are a lot of freindly competetive and fun players on here also. I recommend trying team games and finding players you enjoy playing with consistently. Always glad to have new players.

Ahh I see said the blind man 8-) Thanks for the insight makes sense. Although doesn't that defeat the purpose of the competition?

I think I'll stick around, I'd like to play that player again but seems like I have been added to their foe list. Is that another "sore loser" move. I know I would try my darndest to beat someone who beat me, not avoid them.

A quick glance at your games makes me think that you might be a multi.

He probably just thinks you are a multi because of a 60% win rate. Usually if a new player comes on the site and wins a lot of games they are a multi in most peoples opinion because most new players don't understand the little things of winning these games (or game selection).

Its the things like not attacking 3v2 armies (2v1 dice) or 2v2 armies (1v1 dice). Or trying to grab the small bonuses and keep a high territory count. Most new players also usually just jump in the first 4 games they see on the site and end up being in big multiplayer games they aren't the best for them to be in. You have stuck mostly to 1v1 which most experienced freemiums do because those games go by quicker allowing you to play more games as a freemium (member that doesn't pay).

Another reason someone might foe you (which you shouldn't take personally) is because you are playing above your rank. For example, with a 60% win rate you should probably be at least a captain, maybe a major. So 1800 points or so. You only have 1200 I think. So if I play you 1v1, I am taking on the risk of losing points to a 1200 player but playing someone with skills that should be up around 1800. That means statistically that is a bad game for me to play in. That logic only applies to players who think of that sort of thing (most don't).

Either way, those sort of problems will work themselves out with you just playing more games. Always glad to see new players playing on the site!

Thanks for taking the time to explain, I was drawn to this site because I love playing risk and I have the same strategy there as I do here, leave 2 armies where I can so that I have 2 dice to defend with, don't attack with less than 4 armies unless I have to so that I will always have three attack dice.

i see your point about attacking 3v2 and 2v1 or even worse 2v2 (that's 1 attack versus 2 defense right, who would do that?!?) I used to do that when I first started playing and always seemed to lose. As for the 1v1, I'm not a diplomat so I think that it's the best way to take that part of the game out of it.

Hope to play you when I have earned my rank and it won't be a "bad" game for you.

Some people also might create a new account because they are unhappy with the username on their first account, or maybe they are unhappy with their win percentage.

I'm not throwing accusations around, but it would be clever to create a new account, and then follow up with a thread like this to seem innocent.

And as George said earlier, the few games you have played are a bit suspicious.
